  1. I have grown potatoes in mineral tubs and they did do very well. A 5 gallon pail is a lot smaller than a mineral tub, though. This year I am a bit worried because I did leave things in containers. We had 2 grand babies arrive this spring and Grandma had to go!

  2. How can I keep potatoes to last all winter if I don't have a basement, cellar or anything? I did the same experiment on the potatoes. Haven't harvested them yet so we will see….

  3. I have less then 1/8 acre of my quarter acre to be able to grow anything in and have containers and now a couple of raised beds. Have home, septic system, sheds, trees, and a carport blocking Sunlight so have to use 3 different gardening areas. Hard but it is the best I can do here in my desert yard at 3,000' elevation.

  4. Someone in the comments said that potatoes were a heavy nitrogen feeder and the soil should be a certain PH, I was wondering if you did the exact same thing again except maybe add more nitrogen and make sure the pH is where it's supposed to be, you might get better results.

  5. My potatoes should be ready between Aug. 8 and Aug. 28. Then we can eat "burnt raws". Fry them up on the grill pan and some are burned and others kinda raw. My mimi was the best at making them.

  6. Thanks for the reality check! I have 7 buckets of potatoes going in addition to 3 large raised beds with tomatoes, green beans and cucumbers. This is my first year gardening as an adult and I’m learning a lot. I definitely have many of those same potato cans in the big pantry… 🙂
Im working on getting a larger area ready this year to be able to plant next year and apply what I’ve learned from the beds and buckets.
I guess being a man I’m in the minority of your subscribers, but I love the channel and really appreciate your story and hearing your perspective! Thanks!

  7. I’ve planted my potatoes in totes and very large growing bags as that is all I could do this year! I didn’t do this, but someone I know literally layered her soil and potatoes in a very large raised bed and got tons of potatoes…. But of course, we live in Alaska with an extremely short growing season. And also, I am getting all sorts of canned and dried potatoes. Once we get rid of our very horrible vole infestation, then I’ll feel safer about planting in our land. (We just bought the property last summer and inherited this problem.) you are right Patera!! Gotta have the backup!!!

  8. I grew potatoes for the first time this year, in a variety of containers. I had the same results maybe a few meals. But now I know, and looks like they are going in the ground next year.☺️☺️

  9. I had to pull my taters, it got too hot and they blossomed and died back within a couple days. Large felt containers work great for me otherwise. Will start some more in late August in the shade.

  10. We have a large garden at our country property as well as container planting. We have done container and square foot style gardening at our city property for years. They are a great supplement but it is unreasonable to believe we can survive solely on it. It simply doesn't offer the yield needed for survival. Don't be discouraged and not container plant, but also be realistic and have those back ups as Patera suggests.

  11. We did 4 five gallon buckets…we have dumped one bucket..and did a little bit better than you about 7 of the larger size and a several of the smaller ones…we also planted tarters in the ground in the garden. .but we still have them growing have only dug one plant so far..we had some taters in the kitchen that had sprouted. .the husband cut up planted sprouted ones back in the bucket we dumped. ..to see if we can get a second bucket. .we are north of you in Virginia. ..so a bit behind you on harvest ……we also buy canned potatoes. ..and instant mashed potatoes….and then vacumn seal those for longer storage…we will try some of the older sprouted potatoes back in the garden to try for a second crop. …just a try to see what happens..it will be interesting to know if more than one crop is possible here..cover all your bases..because you get a great crop one year …you may not the next year..you are so right..listen to her people she is telling you the truth..

  12. Fruit trees nearly always have an on year and an off year. I am now grateful when i get lots plums n no apricots or vice versa. Never expect all at once.
