Summary

This video provides a complete guide on how to easily grow peppers in containers, from choosing the right varieties to planting the seeds and transplanting them into larger pots. Good drainage is crucial for growing peppers in pots, and a quality potting mix or a homemade soil mixture can be used.

Highlights

🌶️ Choose the varieties of peppers to grow, such as criolla de cocina and jimmy nardello.
🌡️ Plant the seeds about 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date in high-quality potting mix and on a heat mat.
☀️ Once the young seedlings emerge, move them to a location that gets full sun and has good light.
🪴 Transplant the seedlings into larger pots, starting with a 4-inch pot before moving to a 5-gallon container with good drainage.
💦 Use a tray underneath the container to capture excess water and prevent nutrient loss.
🌱 Use a quality potting mix or make your own soil mixture using equal parts peat moss or coco coir, perlite, and compost.

  1. If you live where summer temps get up in the 90's, don't drill holes on the bottom of the buckets. Drill holes 2 inches above the bottom of the bucket on the sides to create a reservoir to make it easier to keep it from drying out when it's really hot.

  2. Very interesting. I will not subscribe to this channel because James does not reply to the legitimate questions in the comment section, but I am still watching and adding likes.

  3. I love learning from you, but I have to know, What's on your face for parts o this video? I see your face covered with some sort of flannel covering and I'm wondering if its to combat some chemical in the potting mix?

  4. You always present amazing information, how to explain content that is very useful for us is really can be understandable, thank you for the knowledge of how to plant the seeds so that they thrive

  5. You can get buckets usually free or very cheap from the bakery at your local grocery store. Just ask if they have any empty! Our store is always happy to give them to us.

  6. Love the vid and love growing peppers! The most I've grown in s season were 34 different varieties…everything from hot to mild. Marconi Red is a fave of mine along with Aji Amarillo. Overwintering is well worth it for really increasing production. I usually will get 2 to 3 years out of my best plants before changing them out.
Keep up the great work inspiring others to get out in the garden!!

  7. And a question; what's the longevity of those buckets in the sun? Usually they'll become brittle over time and break. Do these do the same? Or is the bpa free ones last longer?

  8. I heard perlite was like (correct me pls) overused or bad to use a lot of. Like from a sustainability standpoint. I just knew some hort girl at my university that wasn't too sure on using it because of the bad dust it gives off and how bad the mines are or something. I'd like to know more on sustainable rocks/ferts/organic matter sources. A lot of my free sources of organic matter like straw and manure I stopped using because I'm afraid of Grazon and even my geologist uncle said Grazon is huuuge problem. And I've seen David the Good deal with Grazon even if the farmers say they didn't spray. Anyways big rant. I love the vids.

  9. James you are such an inspiration. I hope you realize just how much you are appreciated for what you share with us, and from the depths of my heart thank YOU for doing all that you do to help enlighten humanity.
