VIDEO: Mulch Thickness Explained – Garden Quickie Episode 101

Mulch Thickness. Its not a question of whether we need to mulch or not, but rather how much we should be mulching with. The thickness of your mulch is based on the time of year, the climate you’re growing in, the crops to be mulch, and the material of the mulch itself.

Join me today as we take a crash course in mulch thickness with some examples of how much you’d use for certain crops along the way!

It feels just like yesterday I started this series. I’ve compiled an entire playlist of them here, check it out!: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiie7K8ZgA_I1trKU0lbcCqf4NK2f3nhf

2022 is the Year of the Garden! We deserve it after the last little while, and growing our own food and self sufficiency is just the reward we need to get back on track!

  2. Doesn't green grass clippings get hot when they start to decompose? Does that affect the plants? I know in my compost bin they get hot. Wouldn't it be better to let them start to turn brown before mulching your garden?
And my strawberry plants and starting to make runners. I'm in Florida 9b. Is that ok or should I trim them off? Thanks.

  3. I learnt alot from your channel,Jeff. One question though, how is your soil always soft and fluffy?? Mine for some reason turns hard and somewhat compact. I top my bed with compost every year and keep mulch on it. It's kinda puzzling.

  4. I like to mulch grass clippings mixed with either straw or leaves. I find that the different particle size helps them nit together and stay in place without compacting.

  5. Hi Jeff, I used grass clippings in the past, but found I was having big problem with a lot of grass growing in by beds. So I got some straw in the bales it worked great this year. Going to try and find me some straw in the bag for next year. Love your videos keep them coming, Thanks.

  6. Growing up we had a neighbour who would put a layer of newspaper down first, then add the mulch on top.
For direct seed, he lay the newspaper down, cover the edges with soil, then slit his rows in. After the plants were established he would add the mulch.

Have you ever tried this? It seemed to work well.

  7. Hi Jeff, thanks for the quick video on mulching and your other helpful videos. I’m a total garden newbie, living in a condo it’s quite a bit of wind exposure. I decided this summer to try my hand in gardening and have a number of raised planters and regular pots. Roses, peonies, hydrageneas, peppermint, bc native strawberries , rosemary and thyme, and I will try plant garlic and ginger too! Should I be mulching with the cooler weather? Much thanks.

  8. Can't believe we are still getting Tomatos in the Greenhouse here in UK!
Outside tomatoes struggling – blight has reared its ugly head in a small way, but inside greenhouses, red tomatoes still appearing.
Quite amazing for this time of year here.
