Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

Love, love, love sweet Toast climbing up the gate and across the top. Bless her!❤️❤️❤️
I so enjoyed learning to spin. I spent a whole year making sure I spun for 30 minutes a day. It finally became muscle memory. I haven’t used my wheel for a few years now so it’s going to take me a bit to get back in it. I’ve already got it out and planning on doing some this winter
I wonder if Ezra is going to nickname Tilly, Beezus. He seemed to like the idea of a Ramona and Beezus duo, lol!
Lovely video! Your article about your boys was so tender & true. You are such a gifted "wordsmith"! The pond at dusk looked so beautiful and peaceful. The sheep are a great next step addition to the farm. Having mostly "grassfed" animals is a wise goal. I just finished your Homesteading book. The last chapter was pure poetry, it moved this suburb dwelling granny to tears. Thank you for blessing us so richly.
Every video I watch leaves my heart yearning for the life you lead. I need to keep reminding myself to be content where I am, learn what I can, and plan for the future. Love watching!
Sheep love saltine crackers
Piglets are about 6/7 weeks old. November 8th they'll be 8 weeks
❤your blog! Thanks for sharing. I’ve been where you are now❤
Hi Jess, this might be a question you have covered before, have you and your boys ever had a hard time getting close to an animal that was raised for meat? Or ever changed your mind and kept one as a pet on the farm? I can picture myself having a difficult time.
Sing to them to make them like people…
Sounds like his Dad!
I love how you share the brutal honesty of life with kids… and animals lol!! I have three children, 2 huskies, and six chickens… my little city farm. There are lots of moments that are very real and crazy but once we all work together and find out how to all live together…. It’s a peace in my heart that’s so worth it ❤️
I love reading and believe me when I say, you are a terrific writer. Am loving that aspect of your channel/website now, especially since I am not really a homesteader. We were aspiring homesteaders long ago and attended the Homesteaders Festivals in central NY in the 80's, but ended up just being pretty good gardeners. Having a knee replacement on Wednesday, so pretty sure I will be spending a fair amount of time on youtube and the internet, in between Hallmark Christmas movies. Looking forward to your upcoming content.
Everyone should go check out Appalachia Homestead with patara's video from today. It's good to see the big creators give back.
Jess do you still have the other calf you got after halli was born?
How's your willow tree doing? I just want you to get well…Life goes by so fast
Where are the horses, haven’t seen them in a long time
The piglets are just over 6 1/2 weeks old, not 8 or 9. Sep 8 – Oct 24 is 6 weeks and 4 days. Don't ween them too soon.
I worked in a Department store when my kids were young. One day I went past the kids department, & stopped suddenly shocked! I was stunned so deeply, when I suddenly realized “I don’t have little kids anymore! I won’t be shopping in the children’s department anymore!” Part of me wanted to burst into tears, but I was at work & needed to move on. But I remember that feeling…almost like being struck by lightning. You are the first person who spoke about those feelings, & I wonder why we don’t talk about these kind of revaluations…how the passage of time can creep up on us. Like looking in the mirror and realizing the skin under my chin is not as firm as it once was…when did that happen?
Is there going to be a set up space for the bee hives?
Jess we Love and Bless you!
The lighting is incredible! Thanks for encouraging your family to sing!
As much as your boys are boys you sure have instilled good manners in them. I loved when Toby said “Yes Ma’am”. I’m not from the South and it would be nice to hear some Yes Ma’am’s around here! I enjoyed your writing that you shared about motherhood and grief. Very touching. Thanks for being on YouTube Jess!! Hope you are feeling well.
Haley needs some soybeans to help her heat issues! Teach her to crochet to keep her mind off the bull! Cookies are good for anyone! I think the Mother's brand Circus animals are best for the people and the vat 'o plain ones are best for the critters!
