An additional trick is to have a littlely moist soil so it can bind and not fall apart. Great advice though

I think you mean to say "Use the right tool for the job you are doing".
What you were doing there were "fork" jobs.
If you were digging something out to lift it, or you actually wanted to cut it, you would use a spade.
If you wanted to scrape off a section of soil, you would use a spade.
If you wanted to move larger amounts of soil, you might use a spade, but a shovel would be better.
Spades are made for certain jobs. Not for others.

But .. don't the worms also regrow? Therefore you'll be multiplying them
