Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland, Australia, about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online, so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

  1. It's true! The cost of commercial eggs is rising and that's an eggsistential threat to humanity as we know it. Thankfully, keeping chickens at home is still eggstremely affordable and that's not a beat-up!

  2. What is the round bed wall made of? Those are good looking eggs…look big.
Compost looks good too. What is your typical temp where you are? Where are you. Is property expensive…or not?

  3. Oh goodness. The "blame government" is so much an overreach. Maybe add how consumers are priced gouged, monopoly on chicken growers, manipulating or mismanagement of supply chain, etc.
If you want to do these shorts be more careful with your words.

  4. Looking at getting my own chickens around or shortly after Christmas. But due to being in suburbia I am limited to the number of girls I can have, and of course no rooster. The cost of living in general is hurting everyone. In the process of putting raised garden beds in front yard, less grass to mow. And I have two large, one medium and a small vegepod in the backyard. My dream is to have a backyard like you have Mark, maybe one day.

  5. got the council peaking over my fence and sending me letters here in south Wales UK. Have local authorities gone bananas over bird flue over there too? About 4-5 years ago I did get a few bird flue deaths, but nothing since then. But their peaking over my fence because I'm letting them free in the garden for a few hours every other day……used to be all day every day….the poor things, I didn't get them to lock them up 🙂 Also the mess they make when indoors too much is not easy for a pregnant lady to clean up 🙂

  6. Someone mentioned BSF larvae, here’s what you do. Just start an outdoor compost bin that is fueled with a good supply of brown materials, then add the complimentary percentage of fruits and vegetables. The fruits and veg will lure black soldier flies as it decays. They lay their eggs on the decaying material, the eggs hatch in the fruit/veg and larvae start feeding on it, along with red worms and other decay processors. Collect the BSF and red worms to feed the chickens. Along with the fruit/veg that you are already feeding the chickens. If you live in a warm or temperate climate, you will produce bunches. Gives the chickens a nutrient dense diet. Look up black soldier fly larvae on YouTube, there are tons of them about producing them.

  7. Of course his eggs are expensive. More so than a carton at the store. His expense is in time, chickens, upkeep. I get what he's saying and he's right but there is quite a bit of expense involved.

  8. And you really don't know the condition of the animal, fowl or fish. I've seen breasts of chicken the size of turkeys. The time of artificial food and artificial intellect are here. Thank you for sharing!!!

  9. I think eggs are still remarkably cheap compared to other food items. $4.50 for a dozen "'free range" (in name only) eggs when a punnet of cherry tomatos is the same and a mini cabbage or cauliflower is pushing $6.00 makes them a bargain.

  10. That's it! I'm done! UNSUBBING now, I'm sick to death of these "shorts"! They're just a cop out instead of making ACTUAL videos with content worth viewing! More and more youtubers are doing "shorts" instead of making new videos. You all BEG us to watch, like, subscribe and share to all we know and support you via the countless monetary systems you have put in place. It's ALL about how much $$$ you can squeeze out of suckers now! We DON'T wait for WEEKS, sometimes MONTHS to get a fkn "short" video of about 15 seconds!!! That's NOT what we subbed to or for!!! If you CANNOT or WILL NOT create watchable videos for those who have supported you and made you tons of $$$, then you can get knotted and hopefully lose all your subs, because, if you can't be bothered then why should we?!?!?!
