Thank you for pointing out the common mistakes. We all need to be reminded every now and then.
Great video, just wondering all you tubes videos I see a lot of them use the espoma fertilizer but can’t seem to find it in my are we are in Vancouver BC Canada ,,also how do you keep those white moths away do you spray for them
I am SO glad you brought up that mistakes can be our best teaching tool sometimes. Like when I first started gardening, I thought why thin seedlings? Three plants have to be better than one and then leggy starving seedlings showed me how wrong I was. Now I understand spacing and feeding the soil and picking the best seedling to survive and clipping the others in the pod. So many things I can't even list them all. Great video.
The drought was a lot and I underwatered my containers as well. Now we are getting a lot of rain in the winter.
Nature is the one teacher of humility we cannot argue with, she always wins. I over planted squash and lost a lot of useable ground by not getting them either growing vertically or thinning them out. But it was not without merit as it helped me teach my children that you must always adapt especially in the garden.
Perhaps you've covered this but my onions will, with some frequency, have "inner casing" where the bulb will begin to grow the normal outer casing, then decides to grow more interior layers. My guess is that I must have missed a watering or there was an abrupt weather change. Here in Idaho it rarely rains during the summer months so watering is the only way.
#4 is my weakness. Oh well. There are much bigger mistakes. Thanks for the video. It's nice to know I'm not the only one making mistakes!
Okay Jeff, my last big mistakes of overwatering and lack of air circulation caused serious damping off. With your help, I hope I’ve learn a lesson or two, new seedlings started.
Thanks so much for this one. I made 4 of those same mistakes this past growing season, too. Cheap compost because I couldn't produce my own fast enough, under watering, and bad timing leaving plants in too long were my 3 worst ones, though.
Speaking of bad compost so too was mushroom compost for me. Its cheap, but way too alkaline to grow veggies in.
Great information it's always important to share our failures as well as our successes. I accidently planted 2 crops at the wrong time of year, so you are not alone. One thing that I did learn is that in our area even though our chart says that we can grow brassicas in spring our summers can get too hot, so they always bolt. We planted some cauliflower last autumn and harvested beautiful plants in spring. So even sometimes planting charts can also be a little off. So, our lesson is to only plant brassicas in autumn/fall.
Well done. I enjoy your presentation and appreciate your efforts. From here, in AZ, hoping your "cool" season is good to you! Cheers.
Well Jeff it’s the old problem of 30 hours of work needs too be done and only 24 hours too do it in. But, that’s not my problem. My problem is I have 24 hours to do my work, I don’t have the energy anymore. When your old and disabled you do what you can when you can an not worry about the rest. I can honestly say what I do have time for are your videos so keep them coming. Thanks
Good game mate. you might be the other side of the world but I still enjoy watching your video. And it's summer here gold Coast Queensland Australia
Jeff, rule #6 for me is…..loosen up my back before I ever get started.
Mistakes learned & shared are the BEST. Thank you!
I am a beginner, and I don't know what to do next. I have the raised beds built. I have a company in my area that sells bulk soil and mulch. My question is, should I fill my beds with garden soil now in December or wait until spring? I am in SC zone 8.
One of my mistakes this year was over planting. I planted all different kinds of tomatoe seeds and I thought the seeds were to old and that's why they didn't germinate. So I replanted them and they all came up even the first batch. I nurtured everyone of them and in the spring I gave alot away to family and friends. But when the drought came I just couldn't keep up with the watering since I have no irrigation system. But I can't wait to plant already again!!
Cool! What state are you in? I'm in WA, in the desert, we get very little to no rain between June and September. It stinks, but thankfully, water is cheap where I'm at.
My first and last big box store compost purchase cough Miracle-Gro cough gave me a colony of fungus gnats that I'd never ever had before. Hoping my leaf mould compost bin and worm farm give me a great supply for Spring!
