Thank you all so much for watching and Grow BIG!
I wish my kale survived a freeze. Our lows were mostly in the 40s then got a couple nights in the 20s. I was hoping they would recover since everyone says they can handle a freeze but they're definitely all dead now. At least my bok choy survived but with some leaf damage.
Genius ❤ I don’t have any leaves on my property, but hay works (Ruth Strout method) and I got mine for free too from a horse farm
Rodents eat your root crops when storing them in ground ….unless in a protective container
the coming -40f deep freeze might kill off the kale saw a video from POW weather about huge storm coming next week from siberia.
Thank you! Great information!
And here I was finally thinking to not be lazy and clean up that asparagus bed. Now I'm leaving it!
Great tips!!
Would the leaves over a root crop work in a standard garden the same as in a raised bed?
Great asparagus tip – I was thinking about cutting the tops off! Just in time video! Thanks
Does the "root cellar" work in areas with rainy winters?
theres "bladders" in the leaves! i dont know if thats the technical term, but its the medical for something that stores fluid. so i mean, can use that to help describe it!
I live about 150 miles north of you and never harvest my grapes for wine until Dec 1st at the earliest, the sugar content is off the charts for a desert wine.
Still sweating in Texas y’all. My peppers haven’t even got chill shock yet. Where a pepper gets that black burn color when they get to cold.
Has anyone used alcohol/ spirits to keep the soil from freezing around their plants? Because I know of some spirits that never freeze.
I still have cabbages, Brussels sprouts, and kale holding north of Grand Rapids. I should harvest what's left this week. I leave my asparagus ferns for a spring burn of the bed a week or so before their noses start to poke up. Weeds are delayed, asparagus beetles are cooked, and the spears are much easier to see to harvest! My harvests improved a lot the year I started doing this.
Thanks for the leaf cover tip. I put some potatoes in the ground a month before the first frost und covered them with a small leaf layer. I did this because many of my plant potatoes sprouted early due to the long summer. Next time I'll do it different.
About asparagus I got bad advice last year because I read that once the leaves turned brown that you should cut them off and just lay them on top. We have 25 asparagus plants and only 8 grew this season. Do you think all of the other plants died?
Hi Luke, another GREAT video! I always learn something from you. Thank you!
Love the new intro and heading
I had a variety one year that had red berries on them that the robins liked during the winter. I don't have it anymore. Not sure what variety it was.
We were always taught to not get our greens (collards, mustards) until after the first frost! Nice to know the science behind it.
I'm so glad I watched this video before cutting my asparagus tops. This is their first year from seed, and they have grown amazingly well. Have them in a 12X4 bed with strawberries at one end. Do I need to mulch either or both?
My grandfather used to dig the root crops and them just put them in the leaf pile and just dig them out as needed. We would always find a few potatoes and carrots in good shape when turning the leaf pile in the spring. I don't have a taste for beets despite trying. I'd appreciate any beet recipes or advise on varieties that I may like.
Is there a limit to how cold the climate and how deep the accumulated snow can be for the outdoor root cellar to work? We get so much snow here (haven’t seen the ground in about a month and a half now, and our accumulations are at about a foot at this point since it remains so cold that it doesn’t melt between each snowfall).
Please note your area may not freeze but grow zone 3 is already frozen solid I’m 45 miles southeast of Edmonton Alberta Canada
I wish I could stand kale of any variety, let alone Tuscan, but I just can’t.
