Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Our NJ house just listed yesterday 12/16/22! My husband is on his way to join me here on our new homestead in NC. I never saw myself living here but the right property worked out. It took a year for me to move in and another 6 months for him to join me. I've grown so much in these last 6 months. I've learned I can do SO much ore than I thought I ever could. I have chickens and turkeys, animals I've only see at a distance. Hatched them and managed to get them into their coop outside without losing any. Our rabbits are doing well. I'm working 2 jobs to cover both houses but I've been blessed to meet the right people who have supported me, a stranger, more than people I've known for year. Happy belated birthday!

  2. Wanted to take a moment to wish you a Happy Birthday!! You are amazing person, so full of knowledge and I love how you share your heart, seeing how you care for everybody. I lost a dear brother in the lord yesterday and it totally broke my heart. He was a pastor and one of the greatest singers I know. I broke down last night and today driving home from my sons house and was listening to him sing on YouTube and it just brought such great comfort to my heart. He had ALS, and on thanksgiving day he collapsed in the car riding home from dinner with his wife driving they took him to the hospital in Alabama and was already not breathing so they put him on ventilator and he never came off of it. He will be greatly missed and I thought of all the lives he touched and you remind me of him, seeing how you share your heart with us, and reading comments of all the lives you have made such a difference in. I love your farm, and can’t wait to see what this next year holds for the farm and see all the great things that are coming.

  3. Such wisdom. I was in the same situation 2 short years ago. Living in a big house in suburbia Southern California and longing to get out. There was simply no way at the time. Then God seemingly made mountains move and here we are in Central KY in a town of less than 1000 people. Life is good and God is great. He knew the desires of my heart and blessed us. Never dismiss you hearts desire

  4. I chuckle on pocket scramble eggs. I gather a few this summer placed them in my pocket and had a squirrel moment going thru my garden. I had to pull a few carrots for dinner and they were a bit of a challenge for me so I knelt down to dig around them then experienced my aww moment. Like you I am more aware of my actions when bringing my blessings into the house. Prayers to all who need one.

  5. Happy happy birthday! I'm a lot older than you, Jess, but nowhere near as wise, and I really needed to hear this exact message. I found your channel when I was voluntarily unemployed during the Covid surge, and was surprisingly the happiest I've been in years, being at home alone and making my first attempts at gardening, writing, etc (completely unrelated to my career). I've since had to go back to a 40 hr a week job, and it feels like a step backward from what my soul craves, but you've reminded me that I can still use the time to take steps toward what I really want to do. You specifically mentioned "learning to can because I'll someday have a garden" – yes, that was on my mind! I've put aside writing again, but I should do baby steps there too. I've wanted to write for longer than you've graced this earth. Thank you for reminding me to keep the faith and move toward that calling.

  6. My sister's B-Day was Dec 16th. She passed in October 2017, and she would have loved to have visited your homestead, either real or virtually like so many of us do every week, sometimes several times a week

  7. Thank you for using your platform to be an encourager. I’m not sure yet where the Lord is leading us. Life has taken some very unexpected turns in the last 7 years, but I know He is leading us through and am trying to listen and learn any lessons, so that we will be ready for the next step. Thank you. Bless you.

  8. Steamed or sautéed Turnip Greens with butter. You also can slice the bulb ultra thin and deep fry like potato chips. Tasty treat snack. Hope you have a good birthday and the next year is happy healthy and successful.

  9. Turnip casserole, pare boil turnip slices, make a cream sauce and make layers with turnips, thinly sliced onions, grated cheese, the second layer again turnips, onions, grated cheese, cream sauce, and top with cheese and bread crumbs, bake and enjoy. Sadly the cheese and bread crumbs may be out of your dietary needs but it is so darn good!

  10. Wishing you a Blessed and Ever Loved Birthday , when it comes. Love is a Blessing and when You are , You Must Give Love Back In return . Its also Never Having to Say Sorry for feeling Love for Others around You. Merry Christmas Also . Ninette Bird- The Caribbean Wife- Tx

  11. I will tell you from experience, that putting quail eggs in a coat pocket is a guaranteed pocket omelet. They are so small they are easily forgotten. living in town, chicken eggs were not an option.

  12. That was encouraging. My homestead is the goal. I made a list of goals. I got a plan and working the plan! Thanks for sharing your visit to South Carolina and how at the time , when Jeramiah said, "this is gonna be home" it FELT like no big deal. I find that feeling now in search of land. God will make a way when there seems to be no way. I gotta do the next step, like you said. Thanks
