Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. We are in South Louisiana and Mr. Honey planted Broccoli this afternoon as he has to work tomorrow. He will be 80 on Halloween and will be taking me to the hospital for a 4 hour stress test. We continue to #PressOnRegardless. You and yours are called before the great Throne of Grace often.

  2. Hi dear Jessica, I am very glad that you are getting better every day. I think the plant you asked to know the name of is called 'smartweed'. It is from the Polygonaceae family. I really hope this helps you. I would love to know from you if so.
I also offer you to grow a cactus in a greenhouse called Pitaya. A gel is produced from it that is applied to the skin, soothing and pleasant like the aloe vera gel. Just cut a small piece, remove the peel/skin and apply. I use the gel on dry and chapped lips, on acne wounds and fever.

  3. Watching you from Washington State. We’ve had a beautiful Fall! Low 70’s and breezes. It’s good to see you feeling better Jess! I’ve been praying. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, farm, and family! Blessings! ❤️

  4. Here in middle Tennessee, it is cooler too, at 12:AM it is only 50. Hubby has given strict instructions that I am NOT to touch the thermostat. LOL The heat did switch on last week one day, but NOT since then. The sun sits nicely in the sky each day, however, I have noticed that it sets earlier than last month at this time. Here's hoping your eczema goes away real soon. I had it years ago, however, (knock on wood) it seems to have fled since my autoimmune system went haywire. I am fine, at 74 I have arthur in tow (knee actually) each day and I am slower. Ah well, since my car doesn't last forever, why should my body? That's the way I am looking at it.
I used to write all the time. Then my daughter lost the plot (she began using drugs) and then I nearly died… Life goes on, mine does anyway. Cherish those times when your kids want to just sit with you, or ask you to tell them a story; those times are soon gone and they never return. Thank you for sharing so much. Stay safe. (Oh yeah, would you tell that lovely cow I adore her and scratch her for me too.)

  5. It was an exceptionally hot June but starting July, it has rained almost every 24 hour period since then. The dancing golden coin shaped leaves on the quaking aspens are mostly gone after strong winds whistled through the mountain passes each vieing on who could keep the coins aloft the longest here in So.-Central Alaska.

  6. That's so cool teaching your son to crochet. I have been crocheting for over 40 years and just recently my little neighbor girl who emigrated from El Salvadore asked me if I would teach her so of course I was thrilled. She is only 10 yrs old and just a joy to be around as my 2 little grandsons live a distance away. Your blanket is coming along quite nicely. Always enjoy your videos and happy to hear your eczema is giving you some relief.

  7. Hehe… here in Victoria, Australia we are just starting to turn the heater off occasionally (not today)… Spring allergies have kicked in and I started seeds for summer a few days ago in my shiny new greenhouse. Our seasons are very similar (we are just a little less humid in summer) but they are exactly opposite.

  8. Hello from Northern California. High 80’s in the day and low to mid 60’s at night for the next little while. Still picking cucumbers , squash ,tomatoes , peppers, beans ; actually doing better right now because it was quite hot for so long and got a late start. Tried a lot of new things this year. Beans, celery, dandelion greens, peas lettuces potatoes, artichokes . Nothing on a big scale, mostly grow bags, going to try more new things this fall as well. We’ll see what happens. Thanks for all the inspiration. Glad you’re feeling better.

  9. Be well Jess. I'm in Eagle River, Alaska and it's in the 50's during the day and mid 30's to 40's at night. We should have our first frost this weekend. God Bless you and your family.

  10. Try boiling a mug of water and adding a table or tea spoon of baking soda to drink. If body ph is to acidic it will cause a crazy rash sometimes.

  11. I am really looking forward to reading more of your writings. Hello, Fall touched my heart so deeply. Our weather, here in the Puget Sound area of Washington State, has been very much like yours lately. Absolutely glorious for us this years. Looks like we get sunshine through this week at least. Heal well my friend. Sometimes God has to sit us down for a bit so we can listen to His voice. His heartbeat for us. So sweet.

  12. I loved your writing and can hardly wait to read more of your musings! I am from southern Minnesota and we had a light frost already last week which took out my cukes and the tops of my tomato's, peppers and zucchini. 🙁 May God see to it that you have a full recovery to continue to spread Him and your lifestyle to the world. <3

  13. Jess, I have have had a diagnosis of an illness since after my first son was born in ninety-nine.. for over a decade I managed to raise him and his younger brother until it became all consuming in twenty fifteen. I was a busy mom, wife, nurse and also ran our family farm.. when the illness peaked it hit me hard. Instead of taking care of myself over those previous years, I ran twice as hard doing all the things not realizing how much more damage was done to my body. When I went to the doctor with the symptoms I was having, not realizing it was the illness causing my issues, he sent me down a two and a half year health journey of specialists. When it was time to start a plan to get it under control, the options were limited and affected my career outside the farm. In retrospect it was a blessing, from the time when the health plan started until the beginning of fall of twenty nineteen, I had turned that bed ridden period into my classroom! I knew that my career as a nurse was not going to be the same but my life here on the farm held unlimited potential for me and my family. Thanks to people like you and a handful of other homestead channels, I saw where I could do something with my life while taking my own health into my hands in a healthier way and in doing so its now had an amazing impact on people in my community!!
So I just wanted you to know that when life is switching up what's on your plate He has an even better idea for you! Jesus christ is there each step for me even when I get caught up in the goings-on of this world, he reminds me by his unconditional love that he's there!
Looking forward to hearing a devotional sometime soon! So are those that have learned so much from you here in my little world in eastern Ontario Canada. Take care beautiful lady ❤ Cindy aka red.

  14. It is chilly and raining here in NY. I am late planting my garlic due to being in the hospital so I am itching for this to clear. Have helpers lined up because I'm still not at peak. Haven't had a frost yet but at this time of year you know it's coming. The forecast says the 19th but I check every day or so. Glad you are feeling better.

  15. I am so happy you're feeling better. here in Scotland it is cooling down, and rainy. it is in the low teens. Ben is doing so well at crochet. my nana and grandma taught me as a kid, but it took til adulthood to decide I was really gonna do it. These are lessons well learned. Life lessons. Great job!

  16. Most medical issues come from gut health. Add Probiotics, cut gluten, cut dairy. I have had rosacea for the past 10 years, and just recent figured out that the case was gluten. GMO wheat is destroying us from the inside out.

  17. Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia, it's still cold, but warming up. Soooo much rain & wet here. We've really had to delay our spring planting that needs warmer soil.
We still have the wood fire going most nights.

  18. No one ever listens to me. FULL MOOON PROTOCOL!!!! PARASITES CAUSE THIS!!!!!!! RATHER YOU THINK SO OR NOT. 90% OF PEOPLE HAVE PARASITES!!!! FULL MOON PROTOCOL LOOK IT UP. I GOT IT AND IT CURED MY SKIN ISSUES.
