Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

  1. I use old wooden fence sections. Cut them into 2 foot sections, set your posts and screw on the sections. Then cut one of the sections in half. Instant 3 x 6 x 2 garden bed.
I never bury my posts and they are on the outside.

  2. This is almost exactly how I got my raised beds! I rent a little home on a horse farm. The farm owners took down one of their wood fences, and, instead of burning or tossing the wood, my landlady decided to build us tenants several raised beds. the ones close to my house are about 2 meters by not quite a meter (72 x 33 inches). The others are 2.5 x 1 meters. Are they perfect? Nope. Are they going to last a lifetime? Nope, but they'll work for several seasons. I can't wait to start planting!

  3. Hi Mark , I live in Northern Thailand and want to make some raised beds, The galvanized sheet beds would suit me in terms of ease and relocating beds in the future should i need to. however with the temperature getting into the mid 30's most days , would galvanized sheeting create too much heat in the beds for the plants to survive ?

  4. Beautiful property hope everything's good there with this crazy plandemic. Finally talked my mom into letting me do raised garden beds and with the world going crazy gonna do some around the base of her house to also double as cover from possible crazies, looks like the powers that be are pushing for civil war here in the US and with supply shortages hitting here now it might get worse. Love your helpful practical tips!

  5. I stopped worrying about how something looks as opposed to how well it functions. If people say anything about my projects, I tell them it's just like the men in my life–it ain't gotta be pretty, but it DOES have to WORK! Thanks for the great video!

  6. I basically did the same thing, almost same length too, and i did what you did, just planted kitchen veges (unsuccessfully)
i used old fence panels, two lines inside and out (lined it with plastic), caped the edge with the middle fence rail. using roof screws.
i tried carrot, cucumber, red onion(it was already sprouted), white onion and garlic (also already sprouted).
the carrot disappeared, the cucumber not sure i come out one morning it was gone, the red onion rotted and a couple of the white onions rotted.
the garlic on the other hand grows like mad. one of the white onion sprouted and is now seeding, i just want the seeds.
i made another bed out of 200mm by 100mm wood same length ill let you know how i go lol lol lol.
iam going to try a littler patch beside the beds in ground but ill need to prepare area first.

good job by the way 🙂
