  1. Thanks for the game bird feed tip. I also up the protein when they molt and keep it up until spring, but was adding calf manna in addition to boss, whole corn, and sea kelp. Calf manna is EXPENSIVE!! This year, I added brahmas to the flock. I read they pick up egg production during the cold months, then back off in spring. They just started laying a few weeks ago. So far, so good.

  2. I have a dozen girls that are anywhere from 1 to 4 years old. They are free range and most lay year around and eat better than I do! They get Grubbies layer crumbles, Grubbies meal worm for treats and wild bird seed blend with BOSS for "scratch" . I also add kelp and mineral salt in piles in their dish plus mix of herbs. Our eggs are delicious! Wish I had some meat birds but my daughter keeps naming everything!
My girls get supplemental lighting…but not for them. They nest in the barn with my 6 equines..3 minis (age 8, 30 and 33) 1 30ish pony, and 2 horses (ages 17 and 29)..so the night light is for the old folks, not the chickens!

  3. Thank you for sharing! This is great information! I always love to learn more about making my ladies happy! 🙂 and if you come to Montana, I would be fan girling myself all the way over there from ND to come meet ya! Stay warm and stay safe!

  4. Hi Patara, you hardworking, smart chick…..Hey there, I have old hens that are 8 years old in April. I too do not supplemental light, and they live in what's known as their senior lady retirement home. I let them die naturally. I love them. I have a small back yard flock. They are pets more than anything. My hens stop laying a few years ago, when the pandemic began, when eggs were hard to come by, my old Hen Sunflower started laying in March 2020, one egg a day, for 6 month's, then she quit. It is like she knew. She is Silver Laced Wyandotte. She is a great quiet hen, but she is the head sister in charge. LOL

Thanks for going into this! I have the same kind of attitude about my hens where I just want to let them live out the rest of their time with me. I've never really been able to put it into words but how you put it was spot on to my situation.

  6. Patara. Yesterday in Minnesota it was 20 below without the windchill. I asked Google 3 times just to check that it wasn’t a mistake. What do you recommend if no heat lamp?
