Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Jess, you shouldn't build a green house, you should build a red house – The red color helps fruit ripen. In Isreal they did color tests back in the early 90s, it increases fotosyntesis.

  2. I am In full agreement with you on the seating area! I just expanded my tiny orchard/ chicken coop / garden and the seating area was a priority in my design. You want a spot to not only rest from all the hard work, but to sit back and appreciate what you've created. Much love to you.

  3. Thank you for the updates, and your visions of how you want it to be (which changes daily)!! I enjoy watching your farm grow!! I'm one of those with only a porch to grow on, but that's okay. I'm going to grow Zinnias and other flowers this year, & maybe get a cherry tomato & banana pepper plants at Lowe's when they become available! (AFTER our Last Frost Date of 3/9!!) Plants in my Greenstalk Planter didn't fare so well this winter. Mostly because I work nights & am too tired to water when I get home!! I'm going to try & do better. (My Front Porch can get up to 100 degrees in the summer!!) I'm down in North Charleston, SC where it is 47 degrees right now!

  4. I like your garden seating area philosophy, and I think I shall adopt it. My last frost date is coming in less than a month and my seeds will be arriving soon. I bless you.

  5. i know nothing about cows but ive seen vlogs where they put the nurse cow in a small pen tied up with the calf and eventually the nurse cow will let the baby nurse

  6. Great score on the fountain. When you start having your education center and folks walking around venturing the farm. And a treat for the birds and beneficial insects. I’m so excited to see your progress. God has even bigger dreams for you than you can even imagine.

  7. "She's getting real close, you can see her waddling pretty hard." -Miriam literally not bending her knees anymore hahaha sweet girl. Thank you for being such a light. Your humor and tender teaching technique is an inspiration to my own channel now!

  8. I have tried to watch the Justin Rhodes channel but just can't. He just doesn't come across well on camera. He comes across as creepy. His wife would be much better as the one behind the camera, talking etc.

  9. I always love wrought iron cafe tables and chairs. They're just little spots for one or two people to sit and enjoy. Some tables can even have a shade umbrella in them.

  10. Due to our mower, which gives us the ability to garden at all really, a seating area out in the garden wouldn't quite work out. Besides I'm not a good candidate for courting more stings that strictly necessary to tend the garden. However, we have rockers on the back porch, and the garden beds themselves are able to be sat on (a bit low to be the most comfortable height, and then there is the stress about fire ants in bad places, but still…). Those rockers to see the early summer garden from, when it still seems so hopeful and lush, is wonderful. Thank you for reminding me though, because those rockers are blocked off with full bags, and heavy buckets etc. from hurricane season still!

  11. Yay! Goat content. I know they're not your focus anymore as far as dairy producing animals go, but I followed you originally for goat and tomato content, so it makes me happy to see them on the vlog!

  12. I don't really have a sitting area in my garden but I do enjoy just wandering through and just really looking at individual plants or rows to see them for what they are rather than just as "work". I might pull a weed or two, grab some produce, or just nothing…just looking and feeling good.
