Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. I have really liked you and the way you relate your life but after hearing this i am very happy that my thoughts about you were correct, those thoughts were you were a person a good Heart not a fake but a really good heart now I know why

  2. I love every single word you shared. I love your transparency, your faith, your pragmatism, and your encouragement. Over the past 4+ years, I have experienced a few of the same things you described—times of “knowing in your knower”—including both the urge to learn how to grow food and be more self-sufficient, and the inclination to associate urgency with fear. But Psalm 23 reminds us that the Lord is our Shepherd, and we lack nothing. (Other translations say, “I shall not want.”) Yes, I believe the Holy Spirit wants us to be wise and to be prepared. But I also believe that preparedness centers as much around demonstrating faith, being generous, and fostering community as it does ensuring that our pantries will be well-stocked in a season of scarcity.

I have a small suburban backyard and have been learning basic gardening skills these past several years, as well as getting more confident with water-bath canning. I also got my very first backyard chickens just over a year ago. (So fun!) We are God’s children, and children are always learning—learning new skills, and learning to share and think of others. While the world is turning upside down, I’m excited to see where our Father leads us next.

  3. My teenage daughter is like that with not being able to go into public spaces without headphones (she likes movie soundtracks) her anxiety levels are so high I had to put her into an alternate school. I really like your whole message in this video. I resonate deeply about the strong pull into gardening and farming right now. Its important to have faith and follow those calls to act.

  4. When you talked about rising fuel costs in minute 21, I first had to google what gas costs in the USA. Since the war, the price in Germany has doubled and we are currently paying around $9.66 per gallon.

  5. When you said you stopped being in survival mode, my ten year old son popped up and said you had to turn to creative mode. He's thinking about Minecraft. But still relevant.

  6. I am so blessed by this vlog, this has got to be my favorite video to date. Jess this is exactly what you are called to do. I love to hear your heart for God and His will for your life. I haven’t seen it much. Most of the time you don’t really speak about what God has placed on your hear but when you do it just does something to my spirit. I love that you have given Glory to God and talked about growth in the garden. Just loved hearing the heart of God through you today. Thank you. You didn’t ramble, you touched my heart today for the first time in a long time. Don’t get me wrong I watch your videos all the time but I like it better when you add God to the mix. ❤️ Not trying to be critical just wanted to say thank you. God bless you. Love you and your channel.

  7. Guys I just love this! I can feel the desire to be self sufficient and the compassion for others and the love for Jesus in her videos. I appreciate each one that she has documented. She has really inspired me and made me believe that me and my family CAN thrive and have "refuge" where we are planted. Jess, I know you see a thousand comments but I really hope you see this one. I want you to how much you've inspired me and you've made me look at the bigger picture. We own 1 acre of land and I'm dreaming about all the things that can be done with it. I'll never be able to repay you for the confidence that you have bestowed in my heart. With all my heart, thank you & until next time I bless you!❤

  8. I’ve learned so much from you over the years and I’ve never said thank you. So today I say thank you. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, your wins and even your fails. I’ve learned through it all.

  9. I admire you even more now. Your acceptance of others is wonderful and you're behaving like a true Christian, which is a breath of fresh air. We do not share the same religious beliefs but I would feel safe with you any day. Keep being the ray of sunshine we need.

  10. I have that gut feeling too. I've learned a lot on YouTube about canning, dehydrating, preserving, growing. I'll have 16 beds and 6 fruit trees added this year. Calm and moving forward.
I need to learn seed preservation.

  11. Bless you Jess. What we are walking through, is new territory. The enemy is moving, the Bible is playing out as the radical Elites move full steam ahead with the new world order agenda. It is so very sad that so many, even those claiming to be Christians, are turning a blind eye and seeing it for what it is.

  12. Wow, you so nailed it. I'm excited for the same reason! My last 15yrs I have been teaching people how to grow food, preserve it and cook from scratch. July we bought our new off grid homestead and we are building perm beds and a food forest. Keep the videos coming and check out mine if you get a minute. Love you girl!!!!

  13. Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy;
To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.
Our soul waiteth for the LORD: he is our help and our shield.
For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name.
Let thy mercy, O LORD, be upon us, according as we hope in thee.
    Psalm 33:18-22

God bless and keep on giving encouraging people.

  14. You know I’ve felt this way for years. About needing to have a garden and a few animals. Even if their chickens and goats. Always in an apartment and unable to do it. I’m trying to start a small container garden and praying next year God gives us the perfect buy for a garden and a small homestead. And for my husband to be inclusive. He’s down for a garden. Not for the animals.

  15. Skimmed a headline on Bloomberg stating (loosely), "people who never experienced shortages may likely experience them."
My 2-year-old granddaughter and I planted seeds and sprouted spring veggies together; she's not a natural, but it was fun. By age three, she's in charge of all the seed planting…
