Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

What a life lesson! I'll be pondering on this for a while.
We have a Facebook community page for sharing plants and information with our local neighbors. It’s wonderful to connect with them and learn about gardening.
I'm purposely growing way more than we will ever eat, just to share due to the shortages. I'd love to start chickens just for eggs. Not the meat. I couldn't harm an animal I came to love. But the one thing that the people of the depression needed and couldn't get, was eggs. And flour
A group on south Seattle started a plant share 2nd Saturday of the month outside spring thru summer. Beacon Hill Garden Club
The photographer me loves it when you refer to the golden hour. It's the best time for portraits AND gardening.
I love listening to you and being motivated and inspired. I feel like I am drinking a cup of coffee with as good friend.
The jets you are hearing are from McEntyre Air National Guard and/or Shaw Air Force Base…..they are first to be deployed in any military action so they fly every day to be ready…….they’re not too far up the road from you on the NE side above Columbia. They vary their flight patterns so you can virtually go weeks without hearing them. And no, your animals won’t be affected by them!
God works through us all and you're a wonderful example of that ❤️
Thank you for the permission slip Jess. I'm going to be bold and take the next small step. Much love. ❤
Jess, you are absolutely right about our need for Community! Trashing community was/is the WORST part of the mandated lockdowns. Human beings are made for Community.
Even indiscriminate cell phone usage contributes to destroying it. How often do I walk down street on my walk, & pass people who don't speak or even look up. We must restore the sense of connection in our "communities." Bless you for recognizing this & helping it along.
God bless you & Miah for all you do.
Love this so much! As someone who has a hard time with community involvement, I applaud your efforts and commitment. Also, we used to live near where you are in SC and I would totally come out for these events if we were still in the area! P.S. my daughter loves plants + wants to be a barista and said she would love to work in your coffee shop one day, no joke.
Hey Jess…. I can tell that having some of yr family around is giving you joy and u sharing yr knowledge of growing food is going in the right direction and you'll b making a huge impact 2 yr community in the not to distant future.
My little town doesn't do local seed swaps and I would love to start one. Any suggestions on how I could go about starting one?
My goal in life is to build an intentional community based on permaculture. Hopefully someday that will not be such an abnormal idea. Everyone with a backyard garden!
Plants want to grow, people crave community… thanks for putting tears in my eyes, once again. It is so true. I still haven’t found my community. And I will not, as long as I don’t get more active.
I'm curious if Oregon has one? I've been wanting to start a garden/farm community or even go to one
Could you have more planting videos like u used to do
Amen Sister Friend!!! Community is Everything!!! ❤️
I was dreaming last night about starting plants and collecting seeds for sale/swap. This is the permission I need 🙂
When people I used to know ask me what I do for a living, my reply is that I am the crazy gardening lady! They stop and reflect and just kind of look at me for a minute. It makes me laugh and it makes them laugh too! It surprises them and I say it makes my heart happy. I ask what they do and ask if it makes their heart happy and nine out of ten times they say NO, but it pays the bills! I say mine feeds my family and I know what is in it. I am glad that I have taught myself the skills to keep bees, to garden, to can, to sew, to forage and more. In times of trouble, it will be good to be the teacher and mentor to reach out and help those who want to know how. Thanks for the shot of encouragement to staY social and in community. After the last two plus years, it will be fun to look outward again.
Just make sure your donated leaves are not from walnut trees because many plants do not tolerate juglone which is a toxin from walnut branches, leaves, walnuts and their rinds and wood.
