Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

My leeks took 165 days from seed
watching you walk around the property reminded me of when I was a kid but something was missing, I couldn't quite figure it out and then I just got it. I was a kid in the Texas Panhandle and all of our fences were barbed wire! Y'all have no barbed wire! Still beautiful and soul healing.
Jess, the sunflowers that you are using for soil remediation, can you eat the seeds or save them from them or no as beings that they are pulling the toxins from the soil?
Will you please share where your getting your linen dresses?
I love that idea. I thought about the same thing but, renting out suburban homes with gardens built and established perennial veg
I just want you to know how much you have inspired me. First off, I live in South Georgia. My husband had a job change this spring and so we moved into a rental while we search for the perfect property for us. I have since gotten permission from my landlord to put in a garden and have chickens! I need to do a lot of clearing to get more sunlight but in the meantime I've gotten two green stalks to plant and six chicks.
I am struggling with some health issues that slow me down but I'm determined. And I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Thank you for sharing your journey. Thank you for inspiring and encouraging me and so many others.
I absolutely love that you tell your tiny baby plants happy birthday when you see one popping up
Keep living the dream …
I really love the idea of a like-minded communal living situation with permaculture and friendship as main goals 🙂
(TIP) A good way to erase the permanent marker off your milk lids is to draw over it with dry erase makers and then wipe off.
ive been dreaming up a farm forever, I WOULD LOVE TO BUY homesteading land from you. i'll keep saving for my dream.
Aaaand Miah is left-handed. New level unlocked.
Many areas in holland have community gardens that family’s can rent in there neighborhood, and they Barter with each other.
Noah and Miah look and sound alike. So great
The homesteading community dream spoke to me. In the near future, I think community is going to be essential. I live in a little suburb surrounded by farmland, so I'm hoping to make good connections with my neighbours – now to figure out how to do that!
Welcome home! I love all the dreams 🙂
Maybe a way to bring your dream of a homestead community to fruition would be to invite other people to invest to buy the acreage and the survey costs to divide it or buy a group of lifestyle properties.
We just bought land not too far from there and they are 5 to 9 acre lots. Even without labeling it as a homesteading community it's turning out to be one according to the listing agent! We are so very excited and can't wait to break ground. I'd be happy to share all the info I have from our purchase and the research I did in order to find our lot. There were a total of 20 lots and there still are a couple left. But your dream is definitely do-able and is much closer than you think! Let me know how we can connect! I'd love to share with you guys what we know!
You’re speaking to my heart!
Jess, I don't know if you consideredthis, I'm sure you have, in case you haven't, get off the dairy product. If you haven't yet, stop the milkw for about 3 months. See how your skin does. Y'all switch from goat to cow. Your body may act fine for a few months , but then things go crazy. And though your not on the coast, you still may get"salty" air from the ocean. I wish you the best…
I wish all of us could live in a more self sufficient community. How you are living is a dream to the rest of us, though so inspirational!
A friend and I have talked about a homestead community where the houses are on their own 1 acre plots on the edges, and there is shared infrastructure in the centre for growing food, educating children, processing animals/crops etc.
