Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Psalm 42:11 (KJV)

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, [who is] the health of my countenance, and my God.

I think David would feel the same way at times and then he would look up and talk to God – like get it out sort of purge to God . To me its like a spiritual detox

  2. I was so anxious I started seeds now I don't want them to not continue to grow, I am california so last frost is end of February. You are an amazing person I totally get it ❤️

  3. This video was exactly what I needed, right when I needed it. Winter is long and life is a bit strained. My cup has been running on near empty for some time now. Within the first seconds of this video, that raucous and joyful chorus of peepers made my soul overflow. Thank you for this.

  4. What do you when shaming is the norm and not doing so is discouraged? Constantly!

I know what’s healthy but in my current environment down is up, trying new things to get different results is treated like a crazy notion, and trying to live by serenity prayer makes you a control freak. According to loved ones who cares but clearly have their own issues to work out. Separately.

  5. I’ve been feeling lost lately. I have a clean garden slate and I’m really not sure where to start this year. I have one 4×8 raised bed and some pots and a garden stalk but that’s about it right now.

  6. Your words echo my thoughts. I tell myself and my family to enjoy this season of rest because soon we will be busting our butts outside! That it is OK when we chill on the couch and watch a movie because soon we will be so exhausted that we will all fall asleep as soon as we sit down! We NEED the rest times, just as much as we NEED the times of purpose and striving. They are both good and have their place. We are getting snow tomorrow where I live, but in my basement, little seedlings have come to life. Spring is near once again!

  7. I think we shame ourselves because we feel like we should be busy doing "something" (productive) & right now we don't feel that we are. I am a very active person, I hate the winter month's because it's always too cold (& snowy) to do anything outside, other than freeze while feeding livestock. Last Oct I got the top part of my thumb, ripped off, literally. It took a while b4 I was without a bandage & not having patience made doing thing's 1 handed was hard & then doing stuff with 4 fingers was also hard. I can't bend my thumb thanks to the tendon being too tight (or short), but I figured out that I can still weed whack, mow & some other stuff. I face a new challenge of having weakness in my legs (mainly knees) & arms/hands, for the last few day's. This comes on top of recently been sick (chances are it was bronchitis, usually is. And the whole family had a variation) not doing what we use to be able to do, is a blow to our ego & it's hard to come to terms with thing's sometimes. I don't have an issue abt my thumb, but I am starting to have 1 abt the weakness in my muscles. It's not normal & I don't like being weak … physically, emotionally or mentally. But with God's help, we'll get thru it.

  8. Once again it is like you know what I am going through. We bought a small piece of property and moved in a month ago. So many things are not as "advertised." From the house having appliance that don't really function and to diseased trees that are ready to fall down (and some have before we took possession) that I am so disheartened. My dream has become a nightmare and everyone is telling me "it will be fine" and the "I should be happy." Well I am not. And thank you for letting me be okay feeling the way I feel. Bless you.

  9. It is so detrimental to shame yourself for feeling sad. Feel all the feels! It is simply an emotion, just like anger and joy and sorrow and happiness. Sadness needs to have its place. You don't have to live in it but you do need to at least sit and chat with it once in awhile! I love loved loved this episode
