Thanks Mlgardener, I followed your tutorial last year and our bunching onions were awesome, so I came back for a refresher! Good work! Thanks. Mike
Actually I started with the bottom cut of green onions from the market. Put them in the soils in the ground or the pot and watch them grow. Super easy. You can harvest what you need or let some of them grow until they produce flowers and seeds. I am in Los Angeles. They can grow all year round.
How long it takes to come out
No watering after planting? If so, just a sprinkle of water or a good soaking of water?
Great video, but all your videos are great. I have a couple of questions, though. I understand bunching onions are not from the genus CEPA–those are bulbing onions. All the seed I've found (and planted) are Cepa. They do okay, but don't bunch as I expected they would. They make individual scapes and then go to seed if they aren't pulled. However, they don't bulb. 1.) What named variety are TRUE bunching onions? 2.) I let some go to seed to collect the seed. If I plant them this summer, will they germinate right away, or do I have to stratify them? Thanks!
What about blanching them for longer white parts?
My bunching onion and chives like to germinate upside down. I have to dig the head out, turn it and planted the root… sigh
When do you plant them? How long before/after first/last frost?
Hi, I watch your tips all the time. I got seeds of bunching onions thinking they will grow into onions? Do they? Or they end up like spring onions?
I wanna see pics of them coming up and ready to pick, lol. Great video and thanks! Sweet!
Egyptian Walking Onions growing guide might be nice. 🙂
One question-your bunching onion seed packets all say to start indoors 10-12 weeks before last frost. Yet you are direct sowing in this video. Can you clarify?
Seeds you show are HUGE. When I buy them, they are so little I cannot even count 10. They are less than poppy seeds. Where to buy seeds like you show?

Good clip
Hi, I planted around 100 seeds in one the best quality organic compost with vermiculite and have a grand total of 8!!! I just cant seem to get to germinate. I tried another variety of seeds this this year, because I wasnt having any sucess with them, over the 16 years of growing them. I grow masses of other plants, but spring onions just don like me. I think I will just have to go with sets and let them grow up a bit. Thanks for the great information and content with all of your video tutorials.
I love eating onions
More of a root crop than a leaf crop, eh? I cut leaves for seasoning and leave the base in place. They are perennial, after all–something oddly unmentioned in this video.
I was wondering what to do when bunching onions flower. Mine are growing great and they’re hug but a lot are flowering. Is that ok? They are perennial here in NNE Texas.

My 2nd year growing White Lisbon and they died last year and hoping i can grow them this year
Can I use 5g cat littler bucket
when did you add the Phosperus?
Does this include Evergreen bunching onions?
I don't get why you saud onions like phosphorous. Phosphorous helos planrs to bloom. It is potassium that you feed to root crops… like potash. I think you are getting the two confused.
I planted 4 times and nothing came up.
I'm still working on weeds.
