VIDEO: Sprouting Lentils and Broccoli using a Mason Jar

This video shows how to sprout beans and seeds using the Mason Jar method. Two wide mouth mason jars are used, one to sprout lentil beans, and the other to sprout a salad mix of seeds I buy from Mountain Valley Seed Company. The salad mix contains broccoli, arugula, kohlrabi, kale, and cabbage. The beans and seeds sprout in just a few days, and are beautiful to add to any salad, or to stir fry. Nutritious and delicious……Give it a try!

  1. Your sprouts look terrific ! We sprout, too. It's so quick & easy….& way more economical than buying in the store…plus there's way more variety doing it yourself, not to mention the satisfaction! I started out by buying a couple "sheets" of plastic grid from a hobby store…..might be used for some kinds of counted cross stitch projects…..I put a wide mouth ring on it, drew around it, then cut it out. I had 2 sizes of grids. Then the cut-out circles fit inside the ring to go on the jars. That worked fine….except metal rings can rust. So, I ordered 2 Mason jar plastic sprouting lids (which arrived in yesterday's mail)…as well as a new bag of broccoli seeds…so I didn't waste any time getting some of the seeds into a clean jar & one of the new lids on it ! So far, I sure like these lids. I saw the ones you ordered….& I think I'll order a set of those, too….then I'll have a set w/various sized holes….the ones I got both have fine holes. I always use filtered water….yeah, it comes out a bit slower….but I don't want chlorine in w/the seeds !

  2. Once you put your sprouts in the fridge do you continue to rinse them daily to help with freshness? Do they need to also breathe in the fridge or do you put them in a glass jar with a sealed lid?

  3. Do you begin growing all types of seed with a dish towel on them so they are in the dark, and then expose them to light on the last day? Or is this the procedure only for alfalfa sprouts? Thanks for your input and videos.

  4. Excellent tip at 5:22… That's the reason I am watching this video, I was having trouble with mold growing, and also seeds that sprouted/then the tails turned black and they died…

I bet you just gave me the answer! I did not have enough ventilation/air when I was sprouting!
    Thanks very much @ Tikko O !!
