Where do you get that fish? I was unable to find it where I live, Southern CA what other fish can I use. I been coming across sardines ….. what's your opinion on using sardines in water.

I did that this spring.I put a can of sardines packed in water when I transplanted them. They're doing great so far.
If they could also do this to barnacles and zebra mussels.
I knew someone who use to do this with dead crabs found in the garbage from fish grocery stores. The plants grew well.
Yes, my dad used to bury a whole salmon under our fruit trees & the fruit trees would be so loaded the branches would bend and nearly break & so delicious 🙂 I did the water brined canned sardines from the dollar tree, but also added calcium pellets – oyster shells from TSC chicken feed, azomite, blood meal, organic garden lime, whole eggs, michorizza thingy & will use molasses. I smashed up the sardines and eggs though and blend it into the soil and drove the cats crazy but they didn't dig any of it up. Having a blast gardening & enjoy your show, thank you. To be honest though – I believe restoring the soils back to what it used to be centuries ago is not only beneficial to the one – but, many plants surrounding your garden because the roots will look for those nutrients and elements & their networking capabilities. I'm container gardening though but seems to work just as well in my laundry basket containers.
As far as an animal digging up the fish head, the biggest thing you have to worry about is a dog. I've got a golden retriever hound dog mix who will find anything I bury no matter how deep.

My plants are already planted in pots. Can I put fish in and top it with little dirt or it must be buried under the plants.

I guess you can waste your time and energy doing all that and burying a fish under your plants- but I prefer to do what yield better results- I just put the fish under my pillow when I sleep at night and I wait for the fish fairy to come in the middle of the night.
The reason you don’t blend the fish is that you want a slow steady release of nutrients to breakdown over time rather than a heavy dose of nutrients in the beginning.
We forget that plants eat just like we do. They like food over synthetic supplements

I did this under my super sweet 100s thus year and they grew 12 ft tall with no other fertilizer at all.
Plant them in layers , fish ,dirt ,fish , dirt
I bury the fish pretty shallow. About 10 inches deep or less, and never had a problem with anything digging them up. I dont really think that animals want that rank dirt covered fish unless theyd really be starving. Takes more calories to dig that hole than that fish can provide, so it makes no sense to them
Last year, I put a fish under two tomato plants which grew very large and produced over 200, very flavorful, tomatoes each.
