We are keeping a video record of what we plant in our garden, where we plant it, and how much we harvest each year. We also raise chickens, quail, and fish. We are trying to become as self-sufficient as possible in our limited space. We live in a neighborhood. Our garden, fish, quail, and chicken space is about 3,000 square feet total. We wanted to lower our monthly grocery bill and to know where our food is coming from. We want to be able to rely on our own healthy, fresh, homegrown produce and less on processed and packaged food from stores.
Filled the raised beds with soil recaptured from another bed. Topped off with some Black Kow for a soft planting bed. Fertilized with bone meal and ashes from the fireplace. Planted one batch of Candy onions from Dixondale Farms. Pretty satisfied with the project!
Starting to get out and clean up the garden after the winter freeze. Some spring color is showing with the fruit trees and the spring bulbs.
Garden harvest! This is the first time this year to pick our bush butterbeans. We got a really nice harvest from them!! We also picked bush green beans, Roma tomatoes and our pickling cucumbers.
This is a brief overview of how we raise Bobwhite quail. We are beginning to incubate a batch of eggs and I thought I’d show how we go about it!
We got out in the garden and did some transplanting, plant staking, and mulching.

This is just a walk around the garden showing some recent changes. We have removed some crops and planted others.
We harvested our Elephant garlic today for the first time after planting it two years ago. We have no experience at all with Elephant garlic, so it was a pretty exciting dig! We found heads dividing into cloves, individual cloves, corms, and after more investigation, what we believe are corms with a year’s growth. Still…
Today we harvested our Silver Queen sweet corn. We picked it and shucked it so now it is ready to eat or freeze for the winter. We also cleaned up the area in the garden where the corn was to make ready to plant okra and peppers.
We harvested our Candy onions today! We grow Candy onions that we purchase from Dixondale Farms.
Today we harvested yellow straightneck squash, Provider bush green beans, Rattlesnake climbing green beans, Mammoth jalapeno peppers, Better Boy tomatoes, and thornless blackberries. The garden is finally starting to produce!!
I mow on weekends with my brother. A lady at one house we mowed this past weekend had a pecan limb hanging over her house that she needed removed. I brought the limb home to cut up for wood to use in our smoker!
Today we harvested our Provider green beans, Danvers Half long carrots, our first thornless blackberries, our first Betterboy tomato, some yellow straightneck squash, and our peaches. We also did a weigh in of our garlic we harvested earlier in the season.
Today we moved our second group of Roma tomatoes from the flats to larger containers (solo cups), transplanted our eggplants that we started from seed out into the garden, harvested one small planting of onions, and set out some portulaca and marigolds.
We try to keep our garden as well mulched as we can. We keep all areas in the garden covered as much as possible. We mulch with everything we can get our hands on including cardboard, chopped leaves, grass clippings, and hay. We were given eight bales of old broken down hay and we used…
We started our Roma tomatoes out from seeds in seed flats. We then transferred the plants to larger solo cups. They are now large enough and the weather is right to plant them out into the garden.
Our Provider bush green beans and yellow straightneck squash are starting to produce! We got a nice harvest today and cooked up part of it for our meal.
We had a beautiful garlic harvest this year!! The raised bed we used to grow our garlic this year will now become our permanent home for garlic growing!!

In this video are planting our Candy Onions we ordered from Dixondale Farms. We are preparing our onion bed by using soil we harvested from our chicken run and some Black Kow composted cow manure. Hopefully we will get another nice harvest this year!!
We are beginning to prep for our spring garden. We purchased Red Lasoda seed potatoes from our local co-op, Candy Onion sets from Dixondale Farms, and some seeds from Johnny’s Seeds. Our winter garden is about finished. The cold finally about finished everything. Looking forward to spring planting now!!
We harvested turnips and a couple different varieties of greens to have for lunch! The hard freeze didn’t damage everything in the garden. We lost a few things, but some things look like they are going to survive.

We had a hen go broody. Since we don’t have a rooster, we didn’t have any fertilized eggs for her to hatch out. I got some eggs from my brother who has a rooster and let her hatch them out. In the end, only one of the three eggs hatched.
Today we harvested peppers, corn, squash, and tomatoes. The garden is starting to really kick in!!
Our Thornless Blackberries are doing great! We’ve been harvesting from them all summer. They are finally starting to wind down now, but we’ve really enjoyed them this year!! They are great fresh, in cobblers, and frozen in smoothies.
This year we planted Candy onions we started from seed we saved last year, onions started from sprouted onions from last year, and onion sets we purchased from Dixondale Farms. We were pleased with the results of all three!
