VIDEO: Confusing Signs of Nature

Some people plant by the signs of nature. This year, for me at least, the signs of nature are a bit confusing. We have items coming up that are normal for this time of year but there are fewer than normal. Other items are early yet would be normal for the higher temperature ranges we’ve had. Other Items, still, are way early for both time AND temperature range.

  1. Looks to me, Jay, like Spring has sprung. Although, when I was up at the cabin in early January, some of my tulips and daffodils were popping out of the ground and we've had lots of very cold weather since then and more snow than usual. So, I guess it's not a 100% guarantee that you won't still get cold weather.

  2. I always fear a frost/freeze…I rather plant when the weather is for sure in the clear of either one of those, plants grow so much quicker when the ground gets warm or warmer.

  3. You point to a difficult task there, Jay! 🙂 I see our spring plants has been fooled many times here by the early spring heat, and then freeze down by frost. Often they use a whole season trying to recover, but they dont get fit before the next year. (In best case).
However, this is here in Norway. Other locations has different climates and weather systems, and surely have their own "right-spring-starting-time".
I`d rather depend on own local experience than widely spring signs, before planting out. Early springs has cheated me before. 🙂

    Best wishes,
    Halvor.

  4. I lost several rounds of planting entire apple trees when they woke up mid winter and got frozen back down. I had to replace trees 4 different times. My Cherry trees fared much better. I have seen different shrubs bud out mid winter in past seasons.  But the deep rooted trees IE Walnut and Maple seem to wake up at the normal times.  We had 4 inches of snow last year on the 10th of June.  There is still a foot of snow on the ground here.  And more falling right now. Last year was the first fruit harvest that I got in 6 years because the blossoms got frosted off or the weather was too cold for bees.

  5. I loved seeing your wildflowers. The English names for your wildflowers, in order or appearance are 'Snowdrops', 'crocus', 'Glory of the Snow', 'primrose' (both white and purple varieties), and 'wild daisy'.  All splendid evidence that spring has probably come to your part of the world.  (The wildflowers could be deceptive, but probably not the birds.  While wildflowers will come up as a result of a few warm days, however, migrating birds are much more scientifically reliable. I'd trust them over the flowers.)

  6. We still several feet of snow on the ground here with temps dropping onto the negative rang. We are a good month and a half away from growth like what you are showing. I would suggest finding when your normal last freeze is and then worry about planting after that.

  7. Plants are pretty good at knowing what is happening so I tend to trust them but I think it is worth remembering that what they do can be due to conditions in that specific location so it should read to that location. This can be as specific as the particular corner of the garden.
You have lots of nice plants growing wild in your garden there. You are very lucky 🙂

  8. The earth is coming back to life! lol Good video Jay, I'm not trusting what I'm seeing right now…my guy tells me that it's not time here either.
