This is a quick video on breeding mongrel cross bred chickens. I have a really mixed flock of hens some are purebreds and others are our own cross breeds. I’m rather fond of crossbred animals because I think on many occasions a mongrel can be better than a pure. These chicks are our latest natural hatchling survivors and the plan is to eat the boys and keep the girls.

I'm a big believer in the mongrel – they usually tend to be more hardy and well balanced. There's some good lookers in there mate.
It is fun to see what you are going to come up with when you cross breed. I can't wait to get chickens again. We aren't allowed to have them where I live right now.
Awesome vid! Love productive mutt chickens.
Nice birds Mark! I love chickens, they were my favorite animals on the farm when I was a kid, well apart from our sweet Jersey cow 😉
Nice mark. I need to get a nursery area established and do the same.
Do you notice the egg production drop off from this cross? What does a good pure breed rooster cost now days in QLD mate?
Cheers for sharing your insights and techniques.
You should look into what feathers fly fisherman use for tying flies, some bantams etc, once they are killed you skin the neck and cape, they must cure it somehow. But I believe the right feathers and capes are quite expensive to buy. It could be a good by product of what you already do. Just a thought.
How do the mutts lay? I am thinking of crossing some native (wild) ones with some rhode island reds.
I was wondering what the mongrel chickens looked like grown up and realized I was already subscribed.
