  1. Congrats on your garlic harvest Mark! I just learned that  garlic needs that cold snap to form the bulb. Fresh garlic tastes so much better than store bought.
I just viewed a video with lots and lots of fried garlic on top of fish. It looked incredible!

  2. Well done mate. I've never been able to grow it up here. It just never seems to get that big. I've never dedicated an area to it though. Just interplanted it with other stuff. It'll be interesting to see what it tastes like and how it grows for you next season.

  3. Hey Mark it is great that you've been able to grow garlic there in the QLD humidity. Haven't given garlic a go myself but I am lead to believe that it is quite easy to grow in Melbourne. Thanks for the tip with the well drained soil. Have a good one mate 🙂

  4. G'day Mark…..what do you use to fill such high (raised) garden beds? It must be expensive to fill the whole bed with topsoil, or do you use hay bales or something in the bottom first.

  5. I am an experienced gardener with ornamental plants but I have a lot to learn about edible plants. I live in Brisbane and I planted garlic recently, in December actually, thinking that because it was sprouting it must be the right time to plant it. After all this is what you do with ginger. What can I expect from my crop – disappointment?

  6. you didnt really tell me much other than the type and when – which i think would be sometime from march to June?. e.g, did you just get some bulbs, separate them and plant the cloves. did you refrigerate before planting? How deep did you plant the cloves?

  7. Get some "elephant garlic" (Allium ampeloprasum var. ampeloprasum) it's not a true garlic and can tolerate the humid warm weather. It will grow fantastically well in the sub tropics. We used to grow about 3-5 acres every year on our farm in the Bundaberg area, with some heads/bulbs growing to almost 1kg. Plant on the 1st of April and harvest on the 5th November. The only problem we used to have was curing it after harvest, but if you have a dry ,warm dark place to put it in you will do well. Hope this helps someone grow some lovely tasty garlic.

  8. Hello Mark
When you say you planted in winter, did you mean April, or May, or June? To me, the start of winter is 21 June, so is this when you planted?

  9. I just followed your short garlic venture. My old Dad Kevin taught to me about "wintering" the garlic.
This means you have to put it in a month before winter up north. And down south, 6-8 weeks before winter.
I'm down South and trying at 3 months experiment this year. Using the same area of soil, with manure seaweed and Comfrey tea ferment. Planting first lot next week during end of March. Second lot during last week of April. Third lot during last week of May. I'm curious to see if there's a difference when I harvest. The last few years I've been planting earlier and allowing them to winter. To my surprise, they've doubled in size. This will be the first time I stagger the planting. If you have a P O Box and it's legal to send from Victoria to the subtropics, I can post you some purple Australian garlic bulbs to plant? I have white garlic and elephant garlic as well.

  10. Hi Mark, I'm a complete novice gardener living in NSW Norther Rivers (sub-tropical). I have a question – is there any reason not to use garlic from the supermarket?
    PS: I LOOOOOVE your channel
    thanks,
    Lucy
