Folks… no matter what, never slack on your due diligence! It’s a very hard lesson your homestead will teach you. Never assume too much in terms of resources and basic needs for your farm. It’s a lesson no one can predict as we are certainly finding out here on our mountain. Your natural resources should never be taken for granted. Always plan ahead!
Stay safe and thanks for watching! xo

We are getting smoke from the NC fires here on the tip of Tennessee/NC near Boone and the Parkway. It is hard to see areas that you love burn down like Lake Lure. We also live on a creek. It is around 6 to 7 feet wide and 1 to 2 feet deep most of the time. Right now it is about 1 & 1/2 feet wide and and only inches deep in places. We are on a well and praying that it holds out till rain comes. Last year we had rain every other day it seemed. The situation changes and you have to roll with it. Patara you are so right in telling everyone to try and get supplies when you can and not wait because you think that there will be time or item availability later. Very good video. Huggs and Blessings.
stay safe! I am so sorry to see your fire situation. Lived through that in northern Alberta Canada a few years back. 🙁
Praying for you all. May the Lord bring you rain for yourselves, the animals and to put out the fires. You have given us much inspiration since we have discovered you in the last 12 hours. Thank you for your wonderful videos.
Yes indeed, defiantly wise words. Praying for all. Have a good morning!!!!
PRAYING.
praying for you…
Western NC here…same conditions. Arson suspected in many cases. 3 arrested so far. Any tips on Indian Rain Dancing???
you go girl! tell it like it is! thanks for the reminder!
We had air quality warnings yesterday too. Please be safe.
Great advice as always Ms P! Same situation in the foothills of Alabama. No appreciable amount of rain since spring. 64 days without a drop anywhere in the region. Thank goodness I have access to a very large dependable spring. Hauled water to the garden all summer 100 gallons at a time…….Folks please be careful with your fire sources! This is very real!
Uncertain times !! Great advice. Every place has its problems and strange situations abounding. One of the reasons we picked WA is that we get 90+ inches of rain – but then we almost got blown off the hill with 120+ mph winds year before last. Making the decisions on homesteading is SO important. Started a video series here on Homesteading decisions, …because the Decisions are more important to your success than your specific abilities. I enjoyed your video and just subscribed !!
God speed on getting through this all. Thanks.
Working on water conservation although we have a well and haven't had any problems…yet. Trying to get behind the "8 ball" on the water. Went and got a truck load of "that wood" also. Thanks Patara!
Patara you are so wise and spot on! The seasons have changed so much these past 10 years… it's just nuts. We are fortunate we have the pasture for our cattle and so far the ponds are doing okay, plus we have a season spring fed pond which is a blessing…but I see people around us that try to crowd there animals on a small amount of property and no water access except for there city water…and I just cringe to think what if… We have doubled our feed cost this year not including hay which we thankfully have a good supply… but if this weather keeps on I can just imagine how it's going to be for the ones that don't have any hay stockpiled. Im praying for you all for rain… I can tell it's getting serious here also and we have been more blessed with rainfall. Greatest lesson dad ever taught me was prepare for the unexpected and then if you have over your need there is always someone else you can help later on that wasn't as prepared.
My little homestead has been hit hard too. Huntsville Alabama I can't remember when we've had rain and the temperature has been in the 70 and 80. Craziness
Thank you for the wise words and how you take care of your animals You see animals are a gift from God there for us to take care of and take care of them will take care of you I love animals and the reason why I have none
is I can't take care of them I don't as of right facilities for them it will come in time I have something thing God has provided those things for me and when you're diligent and take care of the gifts that God give you he will take care of you too I may be talking in riddles but it is the true God bless pray for you I pray for the Land I pray for your animals and I pray for rain be blessed and walking In HIS GLORY
Very good, folks need to listen to what you are saying. Stuff happens out here, if your not prepared your in trouble.
You are so right. I am so new to this. So far just chickens but I would like to expand but just not comfortable with the thought of how to do it yet. I am fortunate that my husband moved us to an acreage long before I got this pulling to get animals and have a garden. This was never his idea. He just wanted land where he could ride 4 wheelers and do what he wanted. Little did he know what was going to get into my head. As much as I want to go hog wild, I also know that I have to be realistic. I do tend to run through many different scenarios in my head to figure out what I need to get through different problems. Can't always prepare for everything because some things are outside our control but I can sure try.
Good luck; I'll be praying for ya.
Pardon my ignorance but did I hear that 2016 was an El Nino year? Would that be part of it?
I live in Chattanooga and its the same here 🙁 its so sad someone started a bunch of these fires.
very informative and real!!! prayers for rain!! <3 xo
Not only the food you feed your animals will be going up this year but also everyone watch out for the prices on all meats in the grocery store to go down temporarily as the farmers get rid of extra animals and then the prices will go way up. Time to get that extra meat in folks and can, freeze, smoke and dehydrate!
Prayers!
this makes me wonder about having a video about what our rights are to protect our properties. I realize it may differ state to state but for example here in Illinois we were told we had to have no trespassing signs posted every so many feet apart facing outside of the property. This is a great video Patara and love how you "brought it home". It's reality tv at it's finest.
Praying for you guys in Sevier Co
All that excellent information and explanation — and Peaches steals the show. I had to watch again to get back to what you were saying! Cute cat!
Hey I think it was in the year like 2002 that we went through a drought and we had to ration water to the point that we only took like 2-4 minute showers every other day to keep the cost of water low. The city only allowed so much water per household. People were buying gallons of water wherever they could. We would lather up then rinse off to get a short shower in.
