Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started SSM in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

  1. I always plant the base of onions I cut up to get a second serving from the same money spent, super easy. I came from the middle of USA originally but now live in the desert and am switching to 1/2 hectare of garlic in a month here.

  2. 1. Bean is a FRUIT! 3. Zucchini and it’s cousins are a FRUIT! come on man! You’re educating people with ignorance. They are now less educated for having listened to you

  3. I ask green thumb friend what is a plant that is super easy to grow friend says start with mint, few months later I ask – best conditions for lemon balm she says its like mint easy to grow hmmm me says I killed my mint!

  4. In NC where I live, it's quite difficult to grow zucchini. The squash vine borer is really horrible to deal with. This year was the first year out of the past three that we've gotten any sort of harvest.

  5. Question I use to eat carrots as a kid growing up. Now I am way damn grown I am allergic to them. Is there a difference from store bought to growing your own?
