  1. Thank James for highlighting the existence of the plum curculio, I will be keeping an eye out for them I have seen it in the past but I did not know if it was causing any damage in the garden, thanks for that. Here in the UK we have problem with codling moth that lay eggs in the apple and plum blossom then the maggot eats the new fruit some times it fall off other time the fruit matures with a worm in it. The prevention we use is a pheromone capsule that attract the female moth to a sticky pad where they are caught or we apply a sticky band round the tree that catches the moth when it climb up the tree.

  2. What percentage of fruit do you think you would lose to them if you did NOTHING (no shaking even). You're my new favourite channel. Love your stuff.

  3. So glad you showed me these nasty bugs. Just got my first apples on our 5 different kinds of apple tree. I already thinned them out to save small branches from breaking. I wonder if soapy water spray would help? I don't want to lose them but I'll keep my eyes open. Thanks a bunch, take care. Peace and love. Blessings

  4. I was doing some research today about worm castings, fearing I might burn my plants I just bedded (note, there's no salt in worm castings to burn plants, score!), and I found an interesting tidbit.

"Another impressive benefit is the way it naturally repels insects. The digestive system of earthworms produces an enzyme called chitinase. This enzyme is a degrader of chitin, the substance that comprises the exo-skeletons of most insects. When used properly, worm castings help to repel chewing and sucking insects like aphids, whiteflies, and hard-shelled plant bugs. If an insect feeds on the leaves of a plant which has absorbed the chitinase, its stomach will soon begin to dissolve, and death will come quickly."

Maybe you could try top-dressing around your affected trees with a layer of castings. I tried searching to see if there was any study of chitinase/worm castings directly used to fight your bug, but I couldn't find anything solid. You might also want to check out diatomaceous earth. You mentioned in the video they can fly, but would rather walk, using this might help slice them up before they get to your tree to lay their eggs.

Not sure if you've looked into these, but I thought of you when I found that bit about chitinase. Thought it might be helpful. Link below

  5. We had this issue last year with our apple trees! Now I have some ideas to try this year. Thank you! I just found your channel. I can't wait to watch your food forest videos, as that's basically what I'm wanting to do on this new property we have. 🙂

  6. There must be something else on my plum tree as I see elongated sacks on upper branches and it's not nice looking, the leaves are barely there. Is there another invader? Am I supposed to cut away those branches or cut down and get rid of the entire tree? If these are invaders aren't other trees at risk? What are the rules in each State, NJ< NY< PA?

  7. I share the same preventative philosophy that you have, but this little weevil is winning. The curculio has taken 100% of my plums the last few years. I sprayed with Surround last year, but I think it was too watery; perhaps not agitated enough.. I also applied the sticky stuff on the tree trunk, but that clearly did not make a difference. They can fly. I try to get most of the fallen fruit and dispose of it. Do not put it in your compost. Put it in the garbage. I will try using the tarp method. My trees border a wetland and that gives them a lot of good places to overwinter.

  8. Thank you for the information. Second year now my plum tree is affected 🙁 . I never heard about curculio and made the mistake of leaving the dead fruit on the ground. This year I'm collecting the fallen fruit and will follow your suggestion to monitor the tree in the spring.
Question: would brushing the base of the tree with lime or sticky stuff help? the curculios in your video didn't seem to keen on flying

  9. My peach has been attacked this year and looks just like this with that clear gjue looking stuff coming out with a peck on it First I thought birds pecked it and I'm in Deep south zone 8 So we have them too! We actually had a cooler spring here but compared to you guys I cause it's warm to them! I just bought some pear, apple and plum trees Ugh and now wonder what to do with them I still have them pots The apple has little apples on it so does my pear tree. Plum is the only one that doesn't have fruit yet. Are you just going to shake them off and kill them Lol I'm trying to do organic too and this is frustrating isn't It?

  10. I used surround this year for our apple trees to see if it works but all apple trees full of infected fruits now .I also do lots of physical prevention and my homemade sprays but still one apple tree always get infested .I think it’s an old tree maybe I should get rid of that one .

  11. Can it also damage all my ripe tomatoes??..all my Plums are developing huge wholes and falling..and now my large tomatoes have an issue..I also am treating for Meally bugs which are developing in last 2 weeks…using neem oil..70% rubbing alcohol..and drops of dish soap in sprayer tonight first time..recommended to me..I used just neem oil first a few days ago..definitely started to dry and kill them off..but my Marijuana plants seem to be a favorite for the lil pests..1 strain in particular. Of only 3 varieties ( Legal here in California) starting to flower a week ago so I must knock them out immediately! …growing organically as possible..Much Love for the knowledge !!!!
