VIDEO: How to Vermicompost: The Simplest Worm Farm You Can Build

Vermicomposting, or composting with worms, is one of the best ways to integrate food scraps into your garden. Worms make short work of most food scraps and create wonderful BLACK GOLD, or worm castings. Castings are one of the best soil amendments you can ask for, and better yet…worms are easy to care for!

In today’s video we take a look at a DIRT SIMPLE (pun intended) system from my friends at Uncle Jim’s Worm Farm. They sent out a kit, as well as some red wigglers and european worms to start off the bin with.

  1. Hi, Kevin! The video is pretty old, but I hope my comment from the future will not sound stupid 🙂 We also have a vermicomposter at home, we started with about 10-15 worms and a 10L container. We use red Californian worms, I guess it's the same breed you were mentioning in your video. I gotta say that the whole process seems kinda super complicated. For us it was much easier. We got our worms, we added some soil to the container (muuuuuch less that you did, but that is also due to the container size) and some finely chopped food scrapes. And watered them. That was about it. The container has a lid on it. The worms do not crawl out, so far only one somehow fell through the draining hole (he/she died 🙁 ). Overall, it's an incredibly simple process and it's a shame we started so late, honestly.
Thank you for the video! As a wannabe gardener I love your channel.

  2. Good what you are going but see how much of pollution you do when doing such by throwing out polythene,… do it in a simple organic way,.. otherwise it looks like you pollute world just to create so called organic

And this not simple, you are just doing the mixing what you purchase,..

  4. Can you coconut husk bedding that’s for reptiles and their plants for bedding? It’s non-abrasive, biodegradable, non-toxic, and 100% toxic. I’m just wondering because I have used this in the past for reptiles and one block is 1/10 the price of coco coir strictly for composting.

  5. short answers: worms can't drown
long answer: worms can breath oxygen throw air or water. they just prefer to go out of the dirt when the environment is wet, since the moisture on top of the soil protects them from the sun. this gives them an advantage to feed on decaying leaves on top of the ground (fresh food they can't usually get with the sun hanging around)

  6. Pretty awesome shirt. How come this video doesn’t have many comments? I was just looking for your warm video that I saw before and I noticed I hadn’t seen it maybe just because it’s old people don’t know about it maybe you should re-post it

  7. I wish you'd shown us the two types of worms side by side and taught us how to differentiate between the 2. Thanks for sharing this content, though!
