  1. Most all of the actual variables were missed here. Yes solar generation can equate to decreased utility usage, but that's far from the only consideration. Repairs, roof life (now that it has 48 additional holes drilled in it), the shingles were probably prematurely replaced (in order to avoid panel removal when they did need to be replaced), the foregone alternative of earning an average rate of return of 6% in retirement accounts, you mentioned writing the panels off, so there may be gain recognized when/if sold, depreciating nature of the panels ($40k in panels that last 40 years costs you $1k/yr), interest on the solar panel loan, lost investment when you sell the home (I don't see used panels as a benefit). Just turn off the bedroom light, take quicker showers, drive more efficiently, work remotely, use the sun to grow a home garden.

  2. Money should be not the main motivator. 15 years for pay-off ist not that bad when you get 10 years for free after that. Thats 20’000 CAND for free.

  3. Would definitely min/max this by making sure you use all of the electricity generated. For example one way a crypto miner could be running in the summer months to use up the spare energy and generate money.

  4. This can be a 3 minute video. They aren’t worth the money. The power shuts off when there is a local outage. You need to invest in battery packs for your power to stay on. The price of those batteries are astronomical & aren’t guaranteed to be at max capacity when the time comes they need to kick in.

  5. It's not worth it, Grid tied or Off grid. The difference between upfront cost vs the recovery period can become too large. Might take 2 decades to recover, not to mention the power output fluctuates a lot depending on the weather. You might as well just use the money you put into the installation into paying your monthly bills.

It's only worth it if you got the installation and equipment for dirt cheap then you can do it yourself, instead of hiring a contractor to install for you.

  6. STAY AWAY, these panels are a giant waste of money, Remember buying solar panels, electric cars, are just foolish electric cars & solar panels are NOT going to change the weather, You would have to have the mind of a 4yr old child that believes in almost anything is true Santa, tooth fairy, The Easter bunny, But grown adults should be able to tell truth from fiction. It seems Liberal Democrats just do not get it. Liberals are the children of our Nation!
