  1. Most Off-Gridder's think of themselves as being Environmentally aware, but they are proud of their Cats and don't relize that the Cats are competing with the Natural Predators.

Cats may kill up to 3.7 billion Song Birds and 20.7 billion Mammals in the United States alone each year, a new study has found.

The study, led by Scott Loss at the Migratory Bird Center of the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute at the National Zoological Park in Washington, D.C., combined and analyzed data from as many other studies as the researchers could find about cats preying on birds and mammals.

Although the estimates of the feral cat population and the average kills per cat varied widely among the studies, Loss and his colleagues were able to say that U.S. cats fell 1.4 to 3.7 billion birds a year — a huge number considering that the entire population of North American land birds is estimated to be just 10 to 20 billion.

Cats without owners are blamed for most of the deaths. There are about 30 million to 80 million feral cats in the U.S., each of which can kill upwards of 200 mammals a year alone, the study reported.

However, pet cats were far from innocent, causing 258 million to 1.5 billion of the bird deaths and 571 million to 2.5 billion of the mammal deaths.

  2. Question for you when you put your wood chips between your beds did you put anything down to kill off the grass/weeds? I’m in the process myself and was going to put down cardboard and the chips on top was wondering how you did it and how your success has been so far I cannot wait to not have to mow or edges around the beds

  3. So Sorry to hear about the loss of such a young man.
So cool that you had Amanda there while Miah was gone. Having a planting buddy really gets the motivation up to do more. Looking forward to the reveal.

  4. Where did Amanda get her “ Team Jesus” I sure would love to order one. I love your green house and all your gardens but I have a question with the kittens around do they leave little presents around? Is there anything that can be done to be prevented?

  5. Looking for a chap way to build a fence around the garden to keep out deer and rabbits. Can you show your outside fence or do you have a video on your fence?

  6. Hint re garden plans: If you find a design/planting combination that works well in one standard size bed, simply move it over one each year and you will have the rotation plan that you need. I have rows of trellises planted directly into the ground but just plant in the neighboring trellis row each year. The rows are three sections of trellis long so I can easily plant 3 varieties or 3 sequential plantings without a lot of confusion. In between the trellis rows, I put low growing plants and root crops, also divided in thirds and do a similar jump sideways each year. There's really no master plan but it does keep things rotated.
For natural amendments, I keep 4 laying hens for eggs in a very large coop with fresh shavings…They generally poop outside except at night when they are shut in. In addition to their layer pellets, I feed them daily treats of fresh kale and tomatoes and these treats called Cackleberries which are primarily made of ground seashells and dried fruits. Twice a year, I shovel out their coop bedding directly onto the garden, broadcast a layer of wood ashes from the woodstove on top, and till it all in. The shavings add tilth and neutral fiber. The vitamins harvested and expended every year are replaced by the small amount of potent chicken manure and potash. My tomatoes have always been good but this method and my trellises has improved their quality and yield even further. Beyond that, the only other thing I use is a little bone meal where I plant peppers.
I start my plants in Pro-Mix with Michorrizae. A bale costs 30 dollars and I buy 1 per year. It's compressed and would likely start all of your plants easily ,ecologically, and affordably. I highly recommend checking it out.

  7. Hi Jess. I'm loving all of your plants and can't wait to see your garden grow. I have looked everywhere for Holy Basil this year and can't find it, do you know where I can buy seeds?

  8. We ate bolted brassicas.. adding flowers for salad and soups are really good! Theres also a market for pakchoy flowers popular in asian stores. Its cooked in most of our broth soups

  9. Knee- mail going up for Stacie/ Stacy……. this is for friends and family…..Heavenly Father I ask for comfort for every one that was touched by this young man. Please give strength and the warmth of your arms wrapped around those who are hurting. In Yeshua's Holy name. Amein.

  10. Last night when we jumped on to your live as you were ending was such a boast in our mood. Being so far away, we get lonely for ya'll and that few moments made us feel so good. We are thrilled that the homestead helper group is going to expand. Jim had already made up his mind he was going to Ethan's for a week to help him. This is great.

  11. IT IS SO VERY GOOD TO SEE , JESS, AMANDA, BEN AND KITTEN GEORGE IN THE GARDEN TOGETHER . FAMILY TIIME TOGETHER IS SO VALUABLE QUALITY TIME . EVEN MORE AS TIME GOES ON AND ALL OF THEM BECOME EVEN MORE AWESOME AND AMAZING …

  12. I know this video says it's been a year, but I was still like to pray for your friend ❤ Stacy and the loss of her son.

Heavenly Father, please lift her and her family up in your loving arms, give her the strength, grace, and faith to get through the days ❤ she thinks she may not be able get through. Help heal her heart and fill that hole that her son life filled.
