VIDEO: The FIRST Tomato Sandwich of the Year (and How I Make Mine) | Roots and Refuge Kitchen

Today is the DAY! My first tomato sandwich of the year and I’m showing you how to make it. It feels almost silly to share, because it’s about as basic as it gets. How do you like your tomato sandwiches?

  1. I grew my first ever tomatoes this year, and ate my first EVER tomato toasted sandwhich. I was completely BLOWN AWAY at how DELICIOUS it was! I have never been a big fan of tomatoes, but after having a homegrown tomato I am so EXCITED for next years tomatoes, I'm probably going to grow ALOT more next year hahahaha

  2. Toasted bread (mayo and butter) with a couple of avocado slices, one gigantic slice of Dr. Wyche or Paul Robeson tomato, sprinkled with salt, pepper, and a drizzle of olive oil!

  3. Any bread toasted with salt, medium pepper, and heavy on the mayonnaise. I use garden fresh tomatoes right from my garden. My dad even likes to put my tomatoes in BLTs and salads.

  4. I grew up eating tomato sandwiches. My grandfather would slice a tomato and put gravy on it for breakfast. He made it look so good when he ate it. Great memory! I love it as well! Thanks for sharing. I had a tomato sandwich for my lunch today. Yummy.

  5. I am about to have my FIRST tomato sandwich of the season!! I am checking back with this video to see what bread you use! My first tomato sandwich will have a BEAUTIFUL Paul Robeson tomato on it. SOOOOO EXCITED!

  6. Toasted whole grain/seedy bread (unfortunately gluten free these days, but I've found some good ones), toasted, heavy on mayo, a sweet variety of tomato, and a lot of sea salt, which has to go between the mayo and tomato to salt both.

  7. My grandmother was Italian so tomatoes were her passion! When she would come visit me for a week in the summer, I would bake bread and oftentimes have homemade mayo, tomatoes and thinly sliced cucumbers and grandma always wanted mozzarella cheese too. Such a great memory, one of my favorite sandwiches and definitely her favorite sandwich, always made her smile. She would always tell me that I took after her father who was a truck farmer and loved gardening. She was so proud that I love Veda to garden. ❤️

  8. Oh my! I think I'm only a year and a half late to this hehe – classic tomato sandwich with salt, pepper, maybe some basil – thickly buttered bread. But. BUT. While I live in Australia I am from NZ – where I grew up with cold sliced tomatoes on HOT buttered toast, and the salt/pepper/basil. Loving your mayo idea, wondering now about Siracha mayo… mmm… and – I have NEVER seen a sandwich with Just. One. Slice. before! Love it!!!!

  9. Grocery store bought tomatoes I always called fake 😉 I learned that as a young kid! Never liked tomatoes, but from a garden 😉 Oh, we grew up in Kentucky and ate BLT sandwiches(Bacon, lettuce, Tomatoes).

  10. I’m from Germany and we eat tomato sandwiches. We eat it on butter bread and I like to put salt and pepper on it with garlic and onions. I also like to eat tomatoes on white bread with mayonnaise. Both ways it’s delicious.

  11. I learned to eat “tomato toast”. A neighbor, originally from Germany, taught me. You toast 2 pieces of bread, spread butter on the toast, slice a homegrown tomato, place 1-2 slices (depending on the size of the tomato) on each piece of bread, and sprinkle salt and pepper. The. Best. Ever.

  12. That anticipation to taste your first perfect ripe tomato of the season is the main motivation for so many gardeners – thank you for giving this simple ritual the dignity it deserves.
