VIDEO: California Lightworks SolarXtreme 500 Review + Growing Hemp!

Yes, you heard that right…I’m actually going to be growing hemp for the first time! I’m using the California Lightworks SolarXtreme 500, which they sent out for me to review. For the price point, it’s a full spectrum COB LED that’s made right here in America, backed by a rock solid warranty.

LED grow lights can be a confusing topic (see my other video on how to evaluate them), so hopefully this helps you make a bit more sense of what makes a light GOOD or BAD.

California Lightworks has offered 15% off the SolarXtreme 500 with the code “EG15” – https://bit.ly/2mmKYcN

  1. I love the trend I've seen in the last few weeks of gardening channels opening up about cannabis/hemp growing! It's refreshing to realize that tons of people who love gardening also love cannabis and hemp. That light looks great, and I know this is a chip on board light, but there's way more bang for your buck out there in terms of cob lights. Especially if you can figure out how to to build it yourself. A friend helped me with mine and it cost under $300. For something good to go straight out of the box, it's a decent price

  2. I’d suggest a 6” Max-Fan for ventilation. They’re adjustable speed so you are not drawing a lot of power for low heat lights such as led’s and during times of cooler weather.

  3. It’s unfortunate so many gardeners will oversee the joy of the challenge of growing Cannabis. Just simply because they were born in a society where it was decided to be made illegal. Because everyone knows every law is set in stone and always correct, right?! Fact is, this plant is part of the hop family or Cannabaceae, just like your peppers are Solanaceae and your Broccoli are Brassicaceae. It’s all divergently evolving plant life with different adaptations and purposes for humans. But hey, it’s their loss. I still feel bad for them, genuinely. Fortunately, their grandkids will be born in a world where it’s accepted.

  4. I prefer the Chinese knock-off cobs/quantum boards anytime. Cxb3590 + Mean Well or Samsung lm301h + Mean Well will most likely crush this one…

  5. $450 bucks? For that? LOL.. For that kind of money I would expect a whole lot more than some tiny thing hovering a foot from my plants. The light I have now you could tan under in a grow tent 6ft x 6ft and it was $500. Just make sure they use Cree LEDS or COBs, a good driver like mean well and good fans. The biggest failure with lights is the maker goes cheap on the cooling fans and they toast. then the LED pop. Or they use a cheap driver that can't handle moisture and it flambes itself. I'm not even sure if those COBs in that Lightworks light are made for horticulture..
i didn't see them on the Cree list for growing.

  6. Ive been trying to do research online on the best plug and play full spectrum led light for my 4×4 grow tent. I came across CLWSX series on a Youtube Video, and im leaning toward going with the 1000 watt. This will be my first time growing indoors. However, i have experience in outdoors and I don't want to get anythng cheap and rather have something that will last for a while. You mentioned you can't adjust the temp like in the SolarSystem. So, if im going to do Veg & Flower with the 1000 watt, i just lower the light down over time for more ppfd?..

  7. @Epic Gardening,   this is the first time I've watched one if your video's. Wow, great job of an open box and details of why this is or isn't worth the money. Plus, good look on the discount code. As a beginner, I still need to read some more but this was a start. I hope you complete this series from start to finish. I love the fact that the garden community is embracing the cannabis/hemp enthusiasts. Great video. I can't wait to see your playlists.

  8. I have been studying these LED grow lights for a couple years now and this California Lightworks Solar Xtreme and the UVB add on's for flowering seems to keep coming in at the top of the list… I will try one!

  9. FUCK California Lightworks!! They have the WORST customer service that I have ever delt with. I ordered a light from them and they didn't ship it for 5 days. I tried to contact them and it took them 3 days (3 messages) to finally get back to me. I asked them to ship my order the next day or just cancel it if you can't grant shipping the order within 6 days of purchase., The dumbass's at CLW decided it was better business ethic to "cancel the order". FUCK THEM to the max. I'm glad they gave me my money back because their cob lights are shit anyways (I have a friend that purchased a SolarXtreme 500 and it died on him within 1 hour plugging it in. CLW replaced it but the process took over 2 weeks. So their lights are junk anyways). Never buy from California Lightworks. Chinese sellers have better customer service than they do!

  10. Hey Kevin, how did this grow turn out for you? Now that it's becoming more widely accepted/legal, I would love seeing you explore the realm of hemp growing more (specifically organic), You would help out a lot of novice growers 🙂 I really dig your content!

  11. Looks like Im late to the party. Im shopping for 2 LEDs, on a budget so buying 1 at a time. Looking for optimal 5×5 coverage with no tent. Ive decided on this light, electric sky 300, or a timber. What is your opinion on this light, which will be 20% off black friday

  12. Just wait until you get a problem with the light clw are a nightmare customer service is really bad and they still haven't sorted my faulty lights out after 8 months stay away

  13. How can you give a review of something when you are pulling it out of a box and haven’t used it…..
Maybe two seasons in you can give a review otherwise obviously shilling for the man.
