  1. This is my first year. I got a late start, and we had cold weather stunt growth, and I use the wrong soil on some, but the one's with the correct soil are finally growing good. The correct soil appears to be the most important factor. The short season 55 to 60 day variety is the type that is going to give me a tomato, so I'll more of those next year instead. I also try Early Girl next year. I'm in the same latitude as MIgardener.

  2. Luke, do you top your jalapeño peppers? I didn’t because I’m in zone 4A and heard it might not be a long enough growing period if I top. We planted our starts mid June and the plants are already 3 feet high and have roughly 30 peppers on each. Would you suggest topping in this climate? Should I be getting a better yield?

  3. i have been REALLY happy with my kale this year … it looks like it might not be tolerating the heat and humidity anymore, but we are looking at rain for a few days (*fingers crossed!*) so i'm not pulling it quite yet. i have never had kale last so long into the summer, but i have been growing white russian kale and it seems to be much "hardier" than curly kale (and much easier to keep the bugs out of!). but yeah, i have had these ginormous cucumbers from 4 plants trellised up and i have been getting just about a large cucumber a day, which i'm really happy with. the first run has become a little battered from the heat, but i have a "succession" just starting to flower and i am REALLY REALLY hoping some of this heat breaks with the rain! here it was 104 IN THE SHADE yesterday … and that has been one of our "cooler" days! cucumbers definitely are not big fans of that kind of heat and the kind of sun intensity we have been getting! do you grow any "chinese" cabbage varieties … napa cabbage?

  4. Have harvested 12 pickling cucumbers and my jalapeno peppers are doing great this year and they did good last year.my cantaloupe and watermelon is doing really well. My tomatoes are doing good some have ripened and some are taking there time with some disease and my tomatoe seedlings already have tomatoes on them

  5. Beautiful gardens! Such an inspiration. I too am having a banner pepper year when usually its my worst crop. I wonder why that is? By the way, just say the word and we would be happy to send you a Tertill for weeding those onion beds 🙂

  6. My first year to have any Kind of success with a garden. Looking at your tomatoes and how many you have I was put to shame or inspired… in either case I went and started a few more yellow cherry tomato seeds. First frost is December 14th here so plenty of time for a LOT more fruit but probably not THAT much! WOW!!
