It was so HOT over this last weekend! My husband and I had to come up with some ways to care for the chickens during this crazy heatwave! We used ice water, ice blocks, frozen veggies/fruits, and a homemade mister! They all made it!

  1. We used to raise chickens to show at the 4-H fair. My kids would give them a bath and rinse them in downy water before the fair, to make their feathers soft and fluffy! They'd then use a blow dryer to dry them. Spectators couldn't believe they were getting a bath, then seeing them blow-dried really made them laugh! They were so soft and smelled of freshly washed clothes! LoL
We kept egg layers for awhile, and we're down to just one chicken, that we let wander the yard, but it kept digging up our flower garden putting dirt into the sidewalk. My husband had it and decided to give it away. They very next day, he went outside to see dirt on the sidewalk again! It was our chocolate lab who was the culprit! I think he framed the chicken! They actually got along great, often sleeping together in his doghouse! That's unheard of, because labs are bird dogs and hunt them! He didn't like them at first, but it took VERY little training to let Hershey know the chickens were not to be hurt! It's all in how you train your pets!!

  2. aaawww poor chickens. Great idea with dipping them in cool water and the cool mist hose. Great ideas. I am gonna have chickens and ducks hopefully next year.
I'm sorry about you black chicken. I hope she is better.
I never used to set timers when I was younger. I do now. I don't know why. Funny. I love your videos. You are becoming a favorite and must watch! Thank you for all your tips.

  3. If your allowed in your area, invest in a wall. They keep you and your animals safe. I have never been around any city or town that doesn’t have at least a 6 foot fence which is better than not having fences or walls. Hope you get many subscribers so you can build a wall to keep your dogs in the yard and your chickens safe.♥️

  4. You can do more harm to them by dunking in cold water much like you would if you wet your dog that is overheated. Keep the ground moist in their coop and where they can get a good breeze. They will usually have a dust bath when the ground is damp and cool

  5. I just came across your video. I did the same thing you did when we were living in Ohio and the weather got so hot for our chickens. I put one in the old tin wash basin, the first one jumped back out. I put the second one in the wash basin, she did not jump out. I thought she liked it so I left her in it and went in the house. When my son came home and went to check on the chickens the one in the wash basin had drowned. I did not know, their feathers absorb the water and will drowned them. The other chicken grieved itself to death. It was not good. A horrible situation we have never forgotten about.

  6. Next time take your frozen water jugs and place in shallow pan big enough to hold the condensation or not as it will be outside, and place a fan behind them and turn the fan on. It's like having an air conditioners. The fan blows air over the frozen containers and creates cold air. I live in the mid-west and around here where I live, people who don't have AC in the summer do this all the time.
