  2. Two thumbs up,Jess ! As one of the older generation that came in on the bottom end of WWII, I am sure I can feel and know that even my children, let alone my grand and great grandchildren are not aware of. One thing that came to mind was that you need to shell peas (most times) before you ear them )… Keep up with the classroom..I'm still learning the difference between growing food in Missouri, where I grew up, and in Central Florida where I live now…take care and blessings right back to you….

  3. Thank you so much Jess, your story is similar to mine and countless others, but you articulated it so well. Can't agree more, that the time to start is right now with what you have. Thank you for everything you share. Your channel has been so helpful to me as I started my food forest.

  4. Jess, I could listen to you for hours. I've been working in my kitchen and listening to you…..you are so wise. I'm so thankful for the knowledge you share with us…….I'm old school….I want hard copies of anything important to me……Books will never be out dated………..Looking forward to more of this subject…..

  5. Start a survival garden that requires no canning. between eating in season and how the items are stored, it's a cheap way to get started.. Potatoes, carrots, turnips. Greens of all sorts. Green beans (seasonal) dried beans. Tomatoes (dried) garlic, onions, spices, peppers to dry (birds eyes, paprika ect) all can be grown in straw (routh stout) or 5 gallon pails (make your own potting mix) or those blue kiddie pools. OR walmart reusable bags. Can't afford straw bales for Ruth stout method? Use leaves and cardboard. I get my cardboard from rent to own furniture place. Large sheets. Storing roots and potatoes…closets in cardboard boxes, basements in milk crates, in a trash can in the dirt. Look for free materials in the trash. Broken dressers laid on their back make raised beds. You can find oodles of kiddie pools in the trash every summer. .y gas station makes doughnuts and gives me 5 gal pails for free. Look around. Everything can be reassigned and reused. No cash required. Cheap seed potatoes….organic taters from Walmart are 4 bucks a bag instead of the 15 bucks the seed store charges. Learn how to seed out your plants. Plant the "seed" bearing plants in a raised bed by themselves or in pails so you won't miss successive plantings in your beds.

  6. Jess, thank you for speaking and teaching these skills in a manner that is positive, encouraging, and doable for most people, right where they are. Your channel is such a wonderful, positive place and I just love you and your family 🙂

  7. I find it funny that people would want to turn preparedness political. It doesn't matter who is president, if we're attacked, we're attacked. Period. And having things set aside for 'what if' and being mentally prepared and knowledgeable in living off the land is immeasurable.

  8. This might be the BEST video on preparing for food shortages, gardening, mental health, self reliance/sufficiency, community support all rolled into 1 video. I just ordered your book and I'm looking forward to reading it and adding it to my home gardening collection. Thank you

  9. Jess loved this video! I have had the impression that I needed to learn to garden now. I wanted to learn now to be more self sufficient before I had to be and don’t know how. Your book was a huge help and one of my favorite as a new gardner and I have bought several to learn to garden. Then I learned to can the food from the garden. It has been very rewarding and fun and I have felt very empowered by doing so. I’m even teaching my family and friends how to do the same. Thanks for all your practical advice, I’m always learning many things from you. Bless you!

  10. God has always put the desire in my heart to have a garden and mini farm. I was 14 years old when that desire was planted. Now at 46, that desire was burning where I had many hours of restless sleep because God wanted me to pray. In November 4th my husband and I closed on our 6.5 acre farmhouse. During those years of waiting, I did exactly what you said, put your waiting room into a classroom. I watched videos on gardening and homesteading, I purchased books (including my favorite- yours ☺️), I have garden in pots in my balcony and porch, and now I am ready for the spring.

I wholeheartedly believe God is closer now than ever and He’s preparing Hid people for hard days. It’s not a matter of fear, because He clearly says, “Do not be anxious” Phil 4:6, “Do not fear” Isaiah 41:10, “Do no worry” Matthew 22:29. But, rather to be prepared. Proverbs 24:27 “Prepare your work outside; get everything ready for yourself in the field, and after that build your house”.

Thank you Jess for this words of wisdom. I pray people take heart.

  11. I agree with you about books vs the internet. I have become dependent upon the internet to learn more about cooking from scratch. A thought recently popped into my head when I was on Google looking up a recipe for bread. What would happen if we lost power for a long stretch of time or something worse where I didn't have access to the internet. I am not a prepper per say, but I do like to be prepared for the "What if" parts of life, because we don't really know what the future holds. All of this to say that I decided to invest some time and money into writing things down or buying books. I bought your book for this exact reason. Reference books can be very valuable when the need is truly upon you. Thank you for sharing you wisdom. You always inspire me to think about what's important without pressure or fear.

  12. How did you get so wise. I'm older than you and pretty smart, but I find wise council everytime I watch your channel. I'm turning my two urban corner lots into an urban homestead. I raise rabbits in the basement. Chickens in the backyard and just started quail. I've tripled my garden this year. I ordered green stalks and am going to plant them for winter plants indoors. I'm not where I want to be, but I'm on my way. Bless you.
