  1. Glad you posted this. I have spent the last few years learning more about canning and had bought pickling lime awhile back to try a version of Christmas pickles (we use to make something similar I now know isn’t safe) but after learning more about pickling lime I decided I didn’t want to chance it being left on the pickles. This was extremely helpful to hear how and why it doesn’t penetrate the egg. Thank you! We are leaning more towards some new chicks every Spring to keep us in eggs through the Winter but this is good to know in case we try it. Thanks!

  2. What is the white at the bottom of the jar … is that separated lime from the water? Do you have to stir it from time to time to keep it from doing that? I had never heard of this technique before you … interesting…thanks!

  4. I thought "water glassing" eggs was done with water glass (a sodium silicate solution). I think I remember seeing a video of it being done that way a long time ago but my memory isn't the best lol. It's interesting how quickly our society lost practical knowledge like how to grow and preserve food. YouTube has been such a blessing to learn from!

  5. I read in multiple different areas that this should not be done with grocery store eggs. Apparently there's a difference in the shells or something like that. I don't remember the specifics. I'd do this if I had chickens. Ah, yes. The Bloom. That's what I was looking for.

  6. Young hens will lay eggs in the winter months but they must be first time layers not yearling hens. That's why the Amish always rotate the hens. Let the hens have a clutch of chicks in the spring and they will be old enough to lay during the winter months.
