  1. Can i ask what is bright indirect light is? because i was planting a safflower seeds and a marigolds and i don't know how to germinate them in the soil please help

  2. Amazing pond! Plant some edible bananas in the basin to shade the patio/ basin! You might need a bib liner from where the final waterfall flows into the basin to direct water to it, but bananas can be planted in gravel as long as the roots can get into the water. Or maybe that moist corner you showed. Also nice that you didn’t do cliff hangers…

  3. Great start Kevin! Lovely pond construction. Don't forget to cover up that water retainer….Arborvitae would be a beautiful backdrop for your waterfall. BTW, you'll love Greg Whittstock. He Vlogged my pond and was charming!

  4. That is a beautiful pond, I’ve never seen that type of a gravel filter underground pool area. You might need some shade come spring/summer over the fish and for the blue heron’s in SD. They can be kind of relentless, the only thing that worked well for us was a floating alligator decoy. Good luck with the pond, they are a lot of work but definitely rewarding.

  5. I love that when ed was explaining the filter your eyes just glazed over. It's great to see you noob out.

This pond was a bit of a wasted opportunity. You've already diverted your grey water into the garden, diverting it into a a submerged planted "wetlands" reservoir would have allowed you to divert your sink water as well. Essentially it would have turned your entire pond into a natural filtration and nutrient enrichment system which could then be used to water and feed your plants.

You wouldn't be able to sit on the filter, but you'd have a ton more plants, would look stunning and filling the reservoir wouldn't have wasted a drop of water.

Anyway, welcome to the aquatics community.

  6. What kind of material is your impervious membrane? I need to decide what to get soon, and would probably just get whatever you have. Your water storage capacity is epic.

  7. Hey Kevin, fun fact: if you wanna do some fully underwater gardening (mostly inedible plants but absolutely beautiful) you can go get some anubias or bucephalandra plants, tie them on a piece of driftwood or a rock, throw them into the pond and in a few months to years you will have a beautiful underwater bush! You can do the same with java fern (microsorum) as well. They can sometimes if they get big enough even grow their leaves out of the water and live like that no problem. Or if you want a more cold-water kelp-ish style you can look into some egeria densa or hornwort, they grow incredibly fast and propagate easily and you can feed the excess to for example chicken. Also as for me personally – I always LOVE to see some mosses growing around the waterfall – they need a lot of moisture to be happy and healthy but they are so beautiful and really decorative. I love everything about water features and I hope you'll enjoy it as much as us aqua nerds do!
