Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. My seedlings are all moldy this year. I’m so disappointed!!! Not sure if it’s the soil, or we bought a cheap greenhouse with a plastic cover, I was thinking that may have something to do with it…any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Do they need to be thrown out?

  2. Oh gosh, I hope your Scentimental rose is better than mine. Mine is healthy and produces lots of pretty red & white striped flowers, but it doesn't have ANY scent at all. It was a serious disappointment…

  3. Will overhead watering of plants in full glass greenhouses – at times other than early morning, or late evening – cause the plants to burn from the intensity of the sun?

  4. Learned so much Jess – thank you. With grafted roses if the common stock does come up is it all lost? ….or can you then cover the base and return blooms to the fancier roses you bought it for?

  5. We just heard a weather caster in western washington say the last frost date will be MAY 4TH this year! Usually I planted around April 15th-23. Tuesday here says low 31. Ugh!

  6. OH, NO NOT CINNAMON BASIL! I tried it once, and all my basil plants had that tongue burning sensation. Every one, even the genovese that was planted 25 feet away. Never doing that again.

  7. Thanks for this Jess. I've learned styff like you were talking about slowly over the years. Not every year is the same conditions too so some years certain plants don't grow as well etc. It's great when you get a year where most of your garden does well. I love your greenhouse and I hope you find the shelves you want to use this year easily.

  8. Do you start and transplant all your seeds other than root crops? I have only been gardening for 2 years and I just direct sow everything. Flowers food everything even tomatoes. I too am in the south ( north Carolina) so I have a pretty long growing season. Am I missing out? Do I have to invest in growing things inside and transplanting or can I have a successful garden just direct sowing?

  9. Why are you not planting any Asters? I always plant both the Zinnias and Asters for cut flowers. I also plant Cosmos as they go so well and are so easy to grow. The Butterflies love the Asters, especially the larger Butterflies, and they also have bright beautiful colors. Super simple to plant and if you deadhead the spent blooms and leave them on the ground they will self plant and keep growing till frost kills them same as Zinnias will. I don't know what I'm missing as I see so many people only doing the Zinnias.

  10. MULBERRIES!! Lol Jess please get yourself some mulberry trees, they are the most devine fruit I have ever had. I tell people they taste like they came straight from heaven. They would grow so well where you live!

  11. I planted my first tomatoes and a marigold yesterday. I got them as starts because it was already past our last frost date when I decided to bite the bullet… now I'm so nervous because I really want them to do well, but you can only do what you can do. But I'm really hoping for non-sad tomatoes. Wish me luck and that I can remember all the tomato plant info you have shared over the years. Plus, my marigold is beautiful. She needs to be around for as long as I can have her.
