  1. I don’t have a freeze dryer but I dehydrate like a mad woman. I would like that I conserve space and that’s important because I live in a condominium. I’ll get bags of frozen veggies and throw them in my dehydrator and basically six trays equals 2 quart jars. Now six trays is also about 60 ounces of frozen veg. Once I temper the dehydrated veg and I know that it’s really dry I vacuum seal in smaller packages so that I don’t have to open an entire jar to use it. But somethings you can’t dehydrate and I just did a splurge. It was a total luxury but I found a guy here in Tucson who has a freeze drying company and purchased freeze dried….25 year-shelf life…..salmon fillets, shrimp, sirloin burgers, beefcubes….cheesecake. Woman does not live by noodle alone. I just finished dehydrating a batch of citrus and banana. I’m going to do some watermelon next. I saw seedless watermelon on sale and my daughter loves, loves watermelon.

  2. WHAAAAAAAAAT? Mind blown over the banana "split"! I had no idea a banana had three sections like that…I learn the best (and most bizarre) things from you! Thanks for being you!

  3. I live watching your videos you are such a good instructor! I have a Nesco dehydrator that only just started using last year (after watching your videos). I chose a 9 tray Excalibur dehydrator as my 30 year work anniversary gift this year and can’t wait to start using it! Some day I will get the freeze dryer.

  4. Your mom could us the freeze dried strawberries in that cake she made in one of your videos. It would be interesting if it taste the same as the store bought freeze dried strawberries.

  5. Another great video Becky. I have a suggestion. When cutting bananas, strawberries and mushrooms you can use the pampered chef egg slicer (if you have one). Then, all of your slices will be even. When I sold Pampered Chef, we would recommend using the egg slicer for other things. I can't guarantee it to work with other egg slicers as I don't know how strong they are. You can also get replacement wires, so you don't need to buy another one. Or you can use an egg slicer from a dollar store and if it needs replacing it's only $1.25.

  6. i wouldnt recommend to pre-freeze in a regular freezer the air moisture is too damp usually unless you got a ventilated unit. It will affect the end taste. Like leaving stuff exposed in the fridge for too long.

  7. I would LOVE to have a freeze dryer but that's not in the budget…yet! I do, however, love my food dehydrator, especially for cherry tomatoes. They are one of my favorite summer snacks.

  8. Excellent information and excellent comparison. Thanks Becky! I got my freeze drier last fall and I love it! I have so many things stocked up already! I love knowing I have milk and cream for my coffee ready to go in the case of an emergency. I think I might have to do an experiment to see if I can make my own freeze dried coffee that actually tastes good!

  9. I have 3 dehydrators, currently filled with roasted mashed sweet potatoes. Grew from my garden last year. They are almost a year old and some started to grow slips. So had to get busy preserving them. I set my dehydrators to the lowest temp possible and it takes longer but love the outcome better then using their higher temps. So my onions, potatoes and mushrooms look like they went in just smaller. Not brown. I would love a freeze dryer, but not in my budget. :(. I have an Excalibur 9 tray my husband bought me almost 20 years ago, still kicking. Picked up a CABELLA 10 tray when it was on sale. Both of these have fan in back with heat source. But the CABELLA doesn’t seem to work as well as the Excalibur. I also was gifted a used nesco. 4 tray. Heat and fan on top, works great but as you said, must rotate the trays. They all work non stop during my garden harvest. Great video!

  10. I just watched a couple who freeze dried eggs. They cracked all of there eggs mixed them up the poured onto trays. They have then pounded the mix once dried and stored in jars. They rehydrated a couple of table spoons with a similar amount of water mix similar to scrambled eggs.
