In this video, I show you how to grow ginger in containers from store-bought ginger roots. I take you through selecting the ginger rhizomes from the store, the importance of soaking the ginger before planting, right through to maintenance of the ginger plant and then harvesting showing my container ginger harvest in real time.

Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

G'day Everyone, I hope you are all doing well! Even though we do have a few acres, I still love growing in containers and it's amazing how much you can grow in a small space. Every little bit helps especially during periods like this when food prices are rising. All the best and thanks for your support. I'll be trying to answer/acknowledge as many comments as I can over the next few days. Cheers 🙂
I am excited to grow ginger! Love your channel and your practical approach to growing food. The random sneeze made me laugh out loud 🙂
I love the diversity of growth you have there! It looks like all day, every day kind of therapy!
Since recently putting in a couple of raised beds and deciding to grow my own vegetables, I have a special place for my tumeric and ginger. I can finally free them from their pots Let them stretch out a bit.
They do come up later than you would think. Lazy, I guess.
I'm wondering about treating horseradish the same. I lost 3 nice roots over the winter from leaving them in the ground. This past winter wasn't much below 30°. I thought they'd be ok. Try it again, this time digging them in fall.
Bless you!
This was amazing!
ive been wanting to grow ginger in a container (my soil is difficult to work with, to say the least) but I was concerned with the logistics of it. thank you for an excellently timed video
You are my hero, I always tell my friends I grow things that thrive on neglect hahaha.
But your videos have taught me to actually know what I’m doing. I’ve got the smallest garden and my friends can’t get over how much I can grow – all thanks to your guidance. It is so very much appreciated.

This is an amazing video and I enjoyed every bit of it and am also excited to share my investment experience so far this year, I believe it will help a lot of people here that are confused on how to start the year and be productive for the year.
How did the big pieces taste? Were they still really pungent?
Normally Aussie accents make me want to break things, but this guy makes me calm and peaceful.
this guy can make me chuckle with his jokes lol
I'm hoping I can find a decent piece in the store!
not really a big fan of ginger, but I should try it! it looks like a good house plant!
Great video mate. I live in Brisbane when would be a good month to plant some ginger?
In fact I found that non organic produce always sprouts quicker than the organic ones (experienced with potatos and garlic)
The sticker you left on the ginger…the pain…the pain!
Also the sneeze scared the piss out of me and I choked on my water laughing. I love your videos you have taught myself and my family so much. ♡
still love the "woosh!" 🙂 (I have never even tried ginger)
Started from the bottom now we here!
Ginger Beer in the next video?
I purchased a big piece of ginger for flavoring dinner, but left it in the bag on the counter for several weeks. Looked at it one day and saw that it was growing. So I planted it, and it looks good! Looks like a house plant. Looking forward to harvesting it.
Ah the soak is what I have been missing.
Here in the western USA Ginger is well under $5/kg
Mark what does your month fruit and veg grocery list look like? How much money do you think you're saving a month?
This is something I would like to plant next year.
