Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. I’d like to know how to cook some of the things you grow….brassicas, radishes, tomatillos, turnips, etc. I love really anything you post. I am most interested in how you are proceeding with the contaminated soil, animals on the farm, your dreams and goals as you move forward in life on your new farm. When will Miah’s channel be up? Or did I miss it? Hugs

  2. I also follow Becky and Mary. Very good channels. I also follow Rose Red Homestead. She is a wealth of knowledge in what she shares. I thought you might want to check her out too.

  3. Videos of different preserving recipes AND how to use it in everyday food. I have gotten great canning recipes from 1870's Homestead and the best part is…."OK, I canned it but NOW what do I do with it!" They are doing videos on how they use the canned food for everyday meals. I would love to see more on how to use my canned food, instead of just looking at it on the shelf, lol.

  4. So appreciate your share. Question for me is how you would prepare tomato sauce as thanks to you and Jill in how to prune and support I am believing for a healthy garden.

  5. Just keep doing what your doing!we've been following you for years. Keep listening to your hearts desire. Your an amazing teacher.sweet Miah too, kids and fur kids <3 we've learned so much so far from you guys. You let me know, life is full of dreams and goals…and they are reachable! Living our best life in Olalla washington and learning how important the soil is to learn about.

  6. You need a summer kitchen! It's something southern women know all about. It's a screened in outdoor kitchen for processing home canning, dehydrating, and now freeze drying. It keeps your house cooler by cooking in an outdoor kitchen.

  7. Thank you for this and for the reminder that done and in the freezer is still good even though it's not perfect. Today I made a couple batches of freezer jam with berries that were .98 at my local grocery. Not organic, I didn't pick them fresh like I typically do and I was feeling a little badly about this until hearing your message that having the food preserved and on hand and done and ready and in this case for $5 is still good even though it doesn't check all the boxes on the ideal list.

  8. Honestly I wanna know it all! I especially would like to know how to cook pumpkins and make pumpkin pie. I would like to make a homemade one for my husband. He loves them. Thank you for everything you teach us.

  9. I’m so new to all of this so yes to everything! Jess, after watching your channel and reading your book, I decided to give gardening a try. Now I’m hooked and it’s all your fault! You have already taught me so much and I look forward to seeing each and every one of your posts. Thank you so much!

  10. I would love to learn more about canning jams and jellies! A couple months ago our Aldi had raspberries on sale so I bought two flats. The flavor turned out amazing (a little lemon juice brightened it up!) but the jam was thin, even after using pectin. We are so happy to be in this classroom with you all!

  11. 2 ideas for you… 1st, how to use your canned ingredients (not canned meals like the stew). I struggle to use my canned items because I'm used to cooking with fresh ingredients and canned foods are already cooked. 2nd, when you buy a 1/2 or whole beef, how to use some of the cuts that aren't things you typically buy… like tongue, oxtail, liver. I bought 1/4 beef, and therefore didn't get to select my cuts and I got what the butcher wanted to do. Now I have to figure out how to make brisket. There are a couple other cuts I don't normally buy but I can't remember what they were called now. Obviously I'm going to google recipes, but ideas from someone who has tried more than 1 tongue recipe, for example would be great. And I haven't read any of the other comments yet but another channel to check out for preserving is Three Rivers Homestead. She is a master at figuring out how much of what she needs to preserve for her growing family. And I love that she also shows how to use all that food she preserves!

  12. I'd love to see more of what you do with your milk! Our heifer is due in a couple weeks, and we're trying to think of more things to do with the milk products. I'd also love to see how you preserve your garden veggies. Canning, freeze drying, dehydrating, etc. 🙂

  13. You are amazing, I really enjoy your content. Would love more about canning, pantry building,,, and how long pressure canned meals/meats/etc. last on the shelf for? Your garden is beautiful, and I admire your tenacity!
