Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. I just went thru the Hurricane here in N. E. Florida! We had hi winds but no severe flooding! Power was out for only 3 hours but I had to get someone to come over to get everything started again ! Nothing worked the phone , AC, Internet, Tv etc! Two trees went over but I put them back up already! Fence down. Flagler Beach lost the end of the Pier!

  2. Sorry I forgot to tell you I prayed for all in path of the storm.
Also I saw a YouTube video where scientists painted cows with black and white stripes like zebra’s to confuse the flies.
It did cut down on the flies. I hope there is a nontoxic paint out there.

  3. Prayers for all our hurricane impacted friends, Canadian, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Floridian, S & N Carolinian – I'm sure I missed some in the Caribbean. Wishing you all peace, safety and comfort.

  4. So I’ve had the weirdest thing happen. I’m 46, when I was 14 I had some itchy bumps show up on my hands. The dermatologist said I had eczema, gave me some cream and from time to time over the years I’d have very small flares. It’s been at least 10 years since I’ve had any issues…until this week. I have bumps showing up everywhere and a big patch on the back of my hand. With your recent flare up, were you able to identify any triggers? Weird coincidence. I feel for you, my skin itches and hurts. Did your diet change help and are you on medication?

  5. I sincerely hope you fared well in the B-L area. We are so far inland from the coast that typically in my area SE of you, and for that matter your area- will only experience cold buffeting winds and heavy rain. Now Winter will be completely the opposite! You will get far more snow/ice than over my way. Here in the extreme tip of Lexington Co., we get mostly sleet/rain and maybe a light dusting of snow.

  6. Have you run across a Dr. Ken D. Berry in your studies of eczema? He has a YouTube channel KenDBerryMD. He recently released a new video called "7 Skin Signs of INSULIN RESISTANCE". Very interesting. FYI. Have a good day.

  7. We will keep you in prayer. He passed about 15-20 miles from our offgrid property at a Cat 2. It took me 23 hours to upload a 15 minute video. Many in the area are without electricity and cell phone towers are down. We evacuated to the east coast of with family.

  8. Honestly, the real issue with hurricanes, from our experience, is mostly about the tornado effects. Or whatever not a tornado word they are using to describe the little chaos causers. That can eat up a random house. So if you are used to tornado weather, then you totally have the east coast inland storms down pat! Florida got more exciting or horrific occasionally, but up here it just boils down to all about the little tornados.

Our families are still in Florida, and they are all fine this time around, thankfully. Limb prep and avoidance is important, just as you mentioned. Ha! I too was out gingerly picking my young potted lemon trees back up, trying not to stab myself! Put them all close and it looks like they held together by their adorable thorns piercing each other's leaves. From seed, so mostly just for adding leaves to soups and such. May never fruit before they get caught out some year by a freeze.

  9. Prayers to all who have lost family members and their way of life. Recovery from Ian will take decades. I pray for all to have the strength to rebuild their lives. I also pray that we, who were not affect by this storm, don't forget to continuously remember the people that were.

  10. Jess, praying for your family. Love your channel and hope the Lord keeps you safe. So admire all you do. Read your book First Time Homestead. Love love love your view on all aspects of Homesteads. Be safe.

  11. I hate to see you get even a weakened storm like this, but I'm so happy this hurricane did not come our way. Hurricane Ida was bad enough for us last year.

  12. I live in NM been so busy canning apples ( I Videoed that and put it up if you want to watch it) make sure you subscribe if you do. but we have done apple slices (working on that in between watching your video right now LOL ) did apple butter yesterday ALL DAY it seemed a friend let me pick his tree there was like 2 wheelbarrow full of apples. I have a friend who live in Florida, and I have been sooooo worried about her. I didn't know you lived there until I seen the title of your video (sending you just great vibes that you stay safe) How will that do to your garden? will all the fruit fall off and stuff from the wind? OMGosh if I could get just that one little puppy, they are soooo cute!!! I use to have one and she was deaf and I taught her sign language (sit, roll over, speak, shake hands, come, go, you name it she was soooo intelligent I so miss that dog) I STILL need to do a video of that Chemical they sprayed on my garden (well my whole land) 3 years ago, this is the first year it showed no trace of the chemical anymore. just sad that they use this poison. hope you do another video of how you did though the storm. and OMGosh I LOVE LOVE the little black and white one.
