VIDEO: Easy No Dig Plant Border (Around a Tree)

In this video we clean up an old olive tree and make an easy no dig plant border around it.

In this new no dig garden bed we planted some of the following plants to create a guild with the existing olive tree:
Feijoa
Bay leaf
Blackberry
Blueberry
Redcurrant
Grape
Strawberry
Canna Indica
Many different herbs
A variety of succulents
And a lot of annual vegetables like lettuce, onion, peppers, eggplants, melons, tomatoes and cucumbers.

It was a fun little project we did with our oldest daughter!

  1. Hello people! This week we did a fun little project with our oldest daughter and built an easy, DIY no dig plant border around an existing olive tree. Hope you'll enjoy it as much as we did!

  2. Great job! The olive tree just 1 root with multiple branches, probably a fire survivor tree? If you want it to grow properly unfortunately you need to start it fresh leaving 1 or max 2 branches out of all those.

  3. I thought the back hose was a soaker hose, but then you watered with a different hose. Is the black spiral hose for daily watering and you were just giving a good initial soak with the other hose? Thanks!! I'm trying to do similar things in our yard, learning as I go!

  4. I wish i can watch your channel, garden, farm, homestead, projects,… after 1 year and many years after. But maybe that time i no longer exist in this world.
    Anw, congradtulation to your family

  5. hi guys, beautifull work !! but just for info, i did almost the same thing last year also in Portugal at my friend s olace and after a few weeks lots of roots from the olives trees came up to take advantage of the irrigation water. So we had to do it again and put some geotextile underground to avoid that issue. good luck and keep going guys. you are on the good path !

  6. Awesome video! Careful new roots don't grow at the base of the tree over time and wrap around it choking it if they soil you added is high. Doesn't look like you added way too much though and the end look of it is amazing!

  7. Thanks Moreno and all the family for this beautiful and very informative video. What was the diameter of your circle and is there a reason for that?. Also doesn't olive tree have allelopathic properties? if so are the plant forming this guild resistant to this allelopathic effect? why you didn't cardboard the ground before adding the compost layer or no need in such climate and soil? It was a great idea to choose an almost burned down olive tree so to capture the 'history' of your beautiful land. Again thanks a lot for sharing this video and hope you all the best.

  8. need make few solar home mad projects. one would shake with plastic roof or sides or both. hole top under roof leave water out. use dry out fire wood. cut own border from tree stack with spacer in this building dry out make own furniture future or sale wood some money. solar project two. painted with grill or furnace black paint. make box. staple black screen bottom sloop tope put plexus glasses top roof or glasses. had problems both. glasses break in winter if cat goes bathroom on it. plexus glasses bow in heat summer. that not end world want moisture leave bugs food. dehydrate garden food. pepper super easy dehydrate. when get tiny shriveled peaces put blender make spice powder. or soak olive oil use subs or pezza. same tomatoes might put salt tomatoes. soak olive oil few days before use them. keep dry in mason jar storage use old lides keep dry last for ever. dehydrate oregano, basil in leave flakes or powder. dehydrate garlic and onion into powder. all used make home made tomatoes sauses. yet figure out how make solar boiler boil water. so until then have stove make home made sauce. powder stuff let do this winter when want house hot.
