Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Thank you for this video! This is my very first year to garden, and I am feeling very discouraged and overwhelmed with all of the issues I'm having right now. I know I need to be planning my fall crop, but I don't even know where to start! You've given me the push I need to really suck it up and get this next round of planting planned.

  2. You almost made me cry when you said you were raised poor. I was raised poor and we learned very early on we really do make due with what we have. Since I am still very poor, we dug up a big chunk of our back lawn for our first garden. I dug up the wrong spot and half the garden was wasted. People always say just put in raised garden beds and that is fine and well IF you can afford the wood. To make trellises this year would have cost over 200 dollars for cheap 2×4's, we went with rope, it is not pretty but it works. And while we are poor, I don't really feel "poor" just have to get creative, to build a compost bin, we used free pallets. We collected all our kitchen scraps for the year and added compost to the garden etc.

  3. We have gardened for years, but have not done much for the past ten years. Two years ago, we planted a garden, but it was a wash. Last year, I said forget it! This year, I decided to plant a few tomatoes in pots. That led to planting a small garden out back. We shall see how it goes. We plan to move next spring and hope to get back to gardening in earnest. Still, I am preparing. Thanks for the timely message given in a very encouraging manner. God bless you and yours.

  4. I really enjoy your content. Your videos are very informative. You are extremely knowledgeable. If I ever get the chance to get a home in the country. I will most likely start a garden. And look back on alot of your videos. Bless your hearts.

  5. I’m having the best garden I’ve ever had, but I’ve also spent more money on it than I ever have in the past.
Having to just keep it alive until the heat wave breaks right now. This has been a very tough year.
For those who argue, those keyboard gladiators, you just have to overlook most of them. Being able to hear something disagreeable and just walking past it, is a sign of maturity that some folks just don’t show.
I feel for you having to moderate so many difficult people. It’s also unfortunate that YouTube demonetizes videos that speak truth. Just because they don’t like what you have to say, doesn’t make it go away.

  6. Thank you , you inspire People around the world .
I hope you and you're familie are really nowing that you're video's are helping a lot off People. Bless you and you're familie from Belgium

  7. Jess, I can not begin to express how thankful I am for you! I'm one of those people who typed, "How to grow tomatoes" into my youtube search and found you in late 2020. We moved that summer to an older ranch on an acre and I finally had the sun and space to grow vegetables. I have learned pretty much everything I know from you and am well into my second very abundant year. I appreciate your faith, your candor, your advice, and I hate that the current hateful climate gives you pause. Keep teaching us how to garden and showing us your farm and don't read all the crazy comments!

  8. Jess you're our Mr Roger's of the garden. You keep us hopeful.
The first video I watched of yours was your vertical gardening video. I never did a cattle panel, but I knew how, I knew it was an option and I shared it with others, that could do it.

  9. Cooking some of those ways of cooking beans and rice without meat, that we can enjoy! Like you said you know. Teach our children (grown), but don’t want to learn from us. And they need to know, and we can share you with them.

  10. Hi Jess! Just wanted to see if you have ever heard of Rose Petal Jam. Ariel on Simple Living Alaska made that last week and I thought of you. And when you showed us your roses that have bloomed it reminded me that I was going to ask you if you have heard or have made this before. Thought you might like that. Blessings!

  11. Jess you are amazing! I’ve followed you for years now and it’s absolutely crazy to me that the year before my husband and I expand our garden (which happened this year!) I discovered persistent herbicides. It scared me that I would not be able to find soil that didn’t have this in it! It amazes me how much destruction is allowed to happen to our food supply, from the farm up. Did you happen to report it to the extension office or the FDA? I normally wouldn’t even touch those agencies but this has GOT to stop and I think I would make a stink with them since from what I had been tracking through my research, they are supposed to be tracking and filing reports on this! I wish you well and will be gardening more tomorrow because of your inspiration!!!

  12. You are such a blessing, teacher, and encourager to the Kindom of God. You are fulfilling the calling placed upon your life. My family and I are Blessed beyond measure along with thousands of others who have been greatly encouraged and taught valuable lessons by you during these uncertain times to be sustained and grow our own food. God is interested in our success and sustainability too. He loves us. Thank you for having a listening ear and being willing to follow his guidance on what to teach his people.

  13. My husband and I were just talking the other day about how to turn our raised beds into cold frames after the fall crops are done. I have six raised beds and one that still needs to be set up, and we turned a garden shed into a greenhouse, so I have the ability to grow a lot of food. But I want to say that you don't need a large space to grow food, there are so many options for balcony gardens now. But sprouts, microgreens, and aero garden are all ways to grow fresh, healthy food.

  14. In Texas my small garden is doing well this year. my saved seeds from last year are the BEST the problem here is we are entering water restrictions. My husband suggested we can disconnect the kitchen sink and put 5 gallon buckets under to catch the kitchen water and use that for some of the plants. I may learn to love doing dishes yet . I think the Okra, sweet potatoes and herbs will do ok with less water and the tomatoes may have to come out early. Oddly I am ok with it. I have been canning and gardening for years and I know God is in Control. I am also feeling the need to tell people "Get some Food!" It is not always received well but i keep saying it.
Thank You Jess for saying it too. God Bless America we need Him.

  15. Thank you Jess for your frank discussions- How do we decide how much of the staples to buy for 1 person? I have a pretty good garden and a large seed stash and green house- I have 6 chickens as well. I am hopeful… and would like a little guidance to fall planting/ schedules, and staple buying. I’m
I’m done 9 in No. CA so warm and longer season.

  16. Our gardens have not done well this year, flowers nor vegetables and weeds took over. You encouraged and taught us. We took steps to create a no till garden with cardboard and mulch and have started over. Feeling hopeful and encouraged. Thank you Jess for being faithful to your calling! Blessings!

  17. I plant seeds and jar food!! I have rice and beans too. Back in the day homesteads oftens had their own strain of beans. I will eventually have my own strain too. It's a goal of mine. You are great at just being you. I love to watch you. I hope you are able to keep your balance. I believe in you. ❤️
