The weather is hot, hot, hot, here on the flower farm. And we have a few tricks to deal with it. Join us as we install an air conditioner, explain the importance of our roadside stand, harvest at night, and try our best to sell a lot at our local farmers market. No matter what – we are still enjoying these flowers and bouquets.

Might want to tinfoil your windows to keep the temps down.
The flowers look amazing. Are there no veggies this year?
Did you guys quit selling veggies ?
Suggestion for the flower stand. Find someone who has a weeping willow tree. Take cuttings (they root very quickly) and plant one on the west side. You could put two on the west side, creating a cooling area given most of our winds come from the west..
Willows like this grow remarkably fast. Alternative is bushes that tolerate dry, hot temperature.
Just a bit of shade cuts the heat by 5°C.
Ian, needs another crown at the market.
Serina, your arrangements just keep getting better and better…really good. I saw a suggestion for an awning for the flower stand in the comments. Sounds like a good suggestion.
Could you add a glass screen door? Customers would still be able to view inside as they pull up or drive by? This would keep the cool air inside. Also help with the electric bill.
Maybe consider putting a glass door on the roadside shop with a big sign that says "Come On In, We're Open" on the glass. And that way you can maintain the appearance of an open door/open shop without losing the air. Maybe glass door as 2nd door so that at night it can be looked up with solid wood/metal door.
Ian–Since you love the cherries so –have you tried freezing them with the stems on? I used to do it for my kids and in the winter they'd hold the stems and eat them like popsicles, delicious!
Maybe bug netting will work for your road side stand. It can act as a type of shade cloth and people can just pass through it.
So how much from the roadside stand?? I always wish for $2000 dollars on weekend .. but you all sell on weekdays too!! So exciting .. FLOWERS CAN FEED A FAMILY ♥️♥️♥️
You could try a full glass screen door so that they could see that you were open and have a sign on it that way keep the cool air in.

Love watching your videos you all work so hard
Love you guys! ❤
Dumb question, do you keep the flower stand door open? I agree with a comment to put something in front of the door during the heat of the day. Perhaps an umbrella? I put mine up on my back porch to shade my sliding glass door into my kitchen.
It was too hot for this old lady in wetbelt Nakusp. I can only imagine what it must have been like in Kelowna.
I think I remember you saying you take the 'leftovers' to the food pantry. Are their senior citizen homes that might enjoy their beauty?
Y'all could move the dried flowers to the sunny spot in the roadside stand during the hottest parts of the year.
Can you bring the walk-in cooler to the market with you? It is a trailer, right? It would be nice for easier loading and keeping everything cool and fresh if you could bring it all with you in the cooler. Ah, I guess you would need a generator to keep the cooler running. But maybe doable.
Have you considered adding some tinting to your windows to your roadside stand? To help with the heat?
I came for the cherries! 😉
Hi Ian and Serina – hello. 🙂
Would you guys please share insight of how many repeat customers you have each week? Are you selling flowers to the same people/drivers or different souls?
You could use a shower curtain/window rod on the inside of the doorway, then hang a transparent shower curtain. Cut a couple slits for easy entry/egress. If it flaps too much, you can weigh the bottom down with coins or pebbles.
Also, for your buckets of water at the farmers' market, would some ice cubes in the water help? Or a bowl of ice or icy water in front of a fan?
