Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Your motto of changing your waiting room into a classroom has changed my life! My ideal garden didn’t work out this year so, I put a couple of different plants in containers and I just now harvested my first Gypsy pepper, healthy tomato and two green bell peppers! ❤️

  2. Not going to lie, the first thing I did to our big sweet coop when I got it home was to hook up some solar powered fairy lights onto it. They’re currently purple, but the plan is to decorate for Christmas specifically when the time comes!

  3. Zone 7a here! Where I live in NC, I always laugh a bit at the first light frost date here because they say it is 30% for October 23. I've lived here most my life so I've seen many 60 degree Christmas' here. Once it was 80, but last year was 70's. I do only raised beds, so I never really have to worry about ground temp freezing, more the wind chill when it comes to plants. Luckily, I only really have to worry about snow closer to January but knowing it snows all the way up until April at times makes you worry more about next growing season rather than current.

  4. If you pick all of the green tomatoes off the plants when it is expected to freeze, lay them in a single layer in your house, they will eventually turn red. Of course they don’t get bigger but do give you tomatoes well into cold weather. We put ours on a towel on the floor of our sunroom. They got some sun in the morning and bright light the rest of the day. Not like vine ripe but better than store bought disappointment.

  5. Roasting in Chicago is a big deal I have come to learn! Friend of mine (I live in Chicagoland area) explained the in depth process of apprenticeship to professional roaster her boyfriend went through. Who knew!

  6. Do you have any tips on slaughtering animals? Maybe I missed them but I didn’t find any videos on the killing of your animals. And will you be decorating the slaughterhouse with Christmas lights? Thanks!

  7. How do you keep the barn cats from pooping in your garden beds? We have a few neighbors cats that roam around here and they love pooping in flower beds:( I have tried coffee grounds, egg shells, irish spring soap, cayenne pepper and even put sporks up right in the beds. Nothing seems to do the trick.- And you are So right about inspiring people. You bring up things that some of us aren't thinking about and you give us light bulb moments:)

  8. Being in zone 4b, I've just started getting zucchini, cucumbers and okra, waiting on the sweet corn and potatoes to finish up and I might be lucky enough to get a few tomatoes to ripen before first frost in September. It's been an especially cool spring and summer this year so it's been a struggle to garden. For me, a "fall garden" might be planting some lettuce and kale after the corn's done and picked, but it'll be a stretch because my summer garden runs into fall by necessity due to a short growing season. Maybe someday I can do a heated greenhouse and extend my season. I envy you folks in zone's 7-8 who can garden for such a long time.

  9. Placing a chicken run/area between the potagae, garden and towards your house, similar to the design Justin Rhodes has, makes taking the bucket as your going back to the house and hanging the bucket on a corner so when your coming out the next day it's easier to grab

  10. I thought at first it was raining ( with the fan noise in the greenhouse). You definitely need a hammock in the greenhouse for rainy days! Oh, heaven!!

  11. i know down here in Florida you can pretty much grow all year in my area i have not seen a freezing winter in over 20 years and most night only get down in the 40's heck last year i was wear shorts on Christmas day and i only turn on my heater one day last year and 2 days the year before

  12. Central NC here and I had a surprise snowfall on my collards and kale, 13" no less and they not only survived but produced the best tasting sweet greens ever. Some of the outer leaves died but the rest were great! Time for me to start seeds for my fall greens and maybe I can have a successful radish harvest. 3 years of trying and so far I have not eaten a single radish from my gardens. The easiest thing to grow and I failed Go figure!
