Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Thanks for the very informative videos. I feel your pain as far as not eating a lot of what you love to eat. My sugar was higher than I liked it to be so I started a low carb diet and since I do garden a lot and have fruit trees, I too was surprised at how many carbs are in fruits and vegetables. I have sweet potatoes that I will dig up this week, but I haven't been eating them since they're high in carbs. We also had a huge rack of bananas about 80 of them on one stalk. I did eat some but had to stop. They're really good when you pick them off your own plant, nice and sweet. I think that you look much thinner but I also think it looks good on you. Hope you feel good real soon.

Zone 9a wishing you luck that your plants survive the cold weather.

  2. The cold front hit us up here in VA. Last night and tonight its getting down to 32° I covered everything. Except 2 things, and lost those 2. Unfortunately. Frost destroyed them. Just planted a new banana tree yesterday during the 75° weather, then it got down to 32° lol it's currently 43°

  3. I thought I was signed up for your site…. This just goes to show that these reminders to sign up really work! Thank you for all that you share with us and it moves me to see the work you are doing that will help even more gardeners and homesteaders down the road. If I lived nearby, I'd love to help out and learn by doing some hands-on help. I heavily believe in using it forward and I still do at any chance I get.

  4. I'm with you Jess…52f is cold. I'm in Richmond, VA (born and raised) and it gets too cold for me here… its 42f right now at 1030pm…if this was as cold as our winter got I would be happy lol

  5. Girl friend, I too am cleaning up my gut. No sugar, not even the organic stuff, no carbs, hardcore keto, OMAD, intermittent fasting, my last go was a 96-hour water fast and family came from out of town and I blew it big time! Japanese full-on had a major flair-up! So I went back to my plan and am feeling better. The best part is that my tomatoes also were terrible this year so there is that. I am hoping that I can eat a few of my loves this spring. Autoimmune issues stink, big time! Side note I have only lost 11 pounds through these weeks of eating better and that is a major bummer.

  6. 11° Celsius? I agree — that is chilly. I'm in southern Alberta, Canada and our fall has been long and beautiful! Had 3 very light frosts so far but day time temps have been 22° – 30° Celsius (71° – 86° F). Nights are quite chilly.

  7. I live in central Illinois and our temps were down in the 20’s the last couple of nights. We lost all our tender plants. Usually it does not get into the twenties until November in our area. So sad to see the plants go. Stay warm you all!

  8. I'm in the Missouri Ozarks. I had a few cherry tomatoes on the vine I was trying to get ripened before the first frost set in. I didn't make it. It got down to 20 degrees overnight. I came out in the morning and the plant was destroyed. I pulled it. Time to let the garden, and me, rest until the Spring.
