Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. I always was hands on with all my animals, even pigs. My sows were so gentle I would sit with them while they gave birth. Then we could handle the babies without mom getting upset. My sheep were easy to handle; very food motivated.

  2. Aww they are so cute. I'm not a meat eater. Those lil things go through so much. Animals go through hell in slaughter. I couldn't get close to them and then eat them, lol. I couldn't find myself cutting their..

  3. Oh my… i know you will not read every comment, but I love you and you keep saying conversating which is not a word. The word is converse. I hope this helps

  4. How absolutely wonderful to see you and Jeremiah today (10/23), in Batesburg, at the Arts Festival! I commented to you that "we" had morning coffee together and that meeting you in person was both exciting and awkward, all at the same time. So many of us know you like our own, while today was the first day you met most of "us." You both are gracious and embracing! Blessings to you both in all your endeavors!

  5. Congratulations! I have 4 commercial hair ewes and one dorper ram. The bottle babies are always the most friendly as would be expected. I love mine. Just watch out for copper. It's an enemy of sheep and it doesn't take much. Cow feed and horse feed are a no no. I've never had a problem with hair sheep being hard to keep in the pasture. Just like in the bible, the sheep know who the shepherd is and they're usually wary of strangers. Rams are not something you want to be very friendly with like you would your buck goats. Never ever turn your back on one regardless if it's been bottle fed or not, very friendly or not.
Hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.

  6. We raise 100% St. Croix sheep on our farm. You will love them. Easy to take care of especially when raising them on 100% grass. We will have some rams born this Spring from great stock. They will be registered. If you’d like to discuss we would enjoy a conversation about holding one for you guys. We live outside of Nashville, TN.

  7. Have you studied hyaluronic acid for your skin health? I take for eyesight (hyaluronic acid is needed for the structures of the eye and our bodies make less of it as we get older. Look into it if you are interested.

  8. Tilly and Pippa! Love It!
I suggest you do some binge watching of a gal in Ontario Canada named Sandi Brock. She’s a sheep farmer who blogs. I never intend to have sheep on our farm. Horses, dogs a barn cat or two, and chickens. But I’ve learned SO much from Sandi’s blogs.

  9. I had to laugh seeing all the beverages and containers and all you had to take into the truck. That is my wife all over. She takes everything you could imagine on even a short trip in her purse and backpack. Females are the gatherers, I guess?

  10. I really have missed your goats. I had a baby lamb as a young child. It went to freezer camp, I think. My parents did not tell me. I loved that baby. Do you follow Sandi Brock? Love her vlog. Hugs. I am excited to see how the lambs do.

  11. Sheep are what the world knows us for our sheep here are pastor feed meat and milking sheep are bred from some of the hardiest sheep around look out for some Newzealand sheep breeds they are Hardy and love grass and everyone knows about Newzealand lamb as our sheep aren't GMO and good breeds usually cross bred from heritage beeds
