???? MOISTURE PROBLEM IN FLORIDA MY CANS RUST I STARTED SPRAYING THE TIN PARTS RUB IT IN DONT KNOW IF IT WILL WORK TRYING MY AC IS ALLWAYS BROKEN
Those lil buggers love to chew up cardboard and also nest in it. They also LOVE to nest in dishcloths, pot holders, etc. Hubby made me a special wall mounted space with hooks to hang up all my dishcloths, potholders etc on after learning the hard way! Keep anything 'warm and snuggly' hung up and out of drawers!
Because mice love paper products you have to be careful how you store paper towels and TP.
Miss Patera, re: those wire shelves, if you lift them and flip them over you will have a shelf with a lip.
Regarding the mice, I was partway through your video and I ran screaming to the basement and put all my stuffing and mixes into a clear plastic tub. Likewise with my tea and some Uncle Ben’s rice that I bought in bulk.
Thank you for that advice and also the advice that I check to see if my stovetop can accommodate a pressure canner. Turns out my current stove cannot. Yours is the only channel I’ve come across that provided that caveat. I’m not saying no one else has ever said it, but among the homesteading videos I watch regularly, yours was the only one who provided that warning. Thank you. I’m looking into other options to be able to safely pressure can.
Otherwise, I’ve been merrily building my pantry stock and stuffing my freezer.
Thanks again!
Great points about the mice!
I got one of those shelves on wheels to store my canning and dehydrator items, and we found that we could put it together with at least some shelves turned over with the rail up instead of down, giving that lip to keep stuff from sliding off.
Also, in one cupboard that is kind of dark, I had some random plexiglass on hand, and it does great between layers of jars, allowing visibility of the lower lids if needed.
I have mice every year in winter, but this summer decided to come in. It has been difficult to catch them. They are getting quite clever! They eat and trap won't trip. I resorted to a glue trap in the pantry last month. Well, still trying to find the trap and mouse!. No clue how they're getting in. Will check the dryer hose.
Great video and very necessary for to watch. Thank you
Mice also love toilet paper, paper towels, newspapers, etc. They will also chew through wires and set your house on fire. Organize and clean, but if there's more than one or two, call an exterminator and get them out as soon as possible. They say that if you have an infestation, mice don't like to live inside the house. They will come in to find food and then take it back to their nest somewhere outside the house.
We have had a rodent issue in the past. Cats are great or poison, proper poison from a pest control store, not hardware store poison, you are just feeding them. Even though we resolved our rodent problem, they still try to get in every fall and I have to ensure my preps are battened down especially during that time. I have most of my foods in thick plastic bins, except cans and bottles. The other day I noted the label on a peanut butter container had been chewed, but thankfully not the container itself. So now I am thinking all plastic containers will also need to be placed into large plastic bins. Only cans and glass jars will remain on shelves.
Ants can also get in and cause great strife.
I had to giggle when I saw your canning rings on a string … I have mine in the closet stored just like that. I thought I was the only one.
I put bay leaves in all my plastic tubs, I read that mice and bugs don’t like bay leaf smells
We recently found mouse nibbling of our car registration… in the glove box of our Subaru Legacy!
Caned food will freeze and brake the can open
I added roll out shelves to my pantry. It doubled my space and leaves every day items at hand. I also added small elastic hooks on the back side of them to keep items in.
Get expanding crack seal to fill holes
I shop every two weeks at the same Walmart. The prices are higher every time we go. Today was the last straw. Huge spike in price on chicken fresh or canned. My daughter says they are trying to turn us into vegetarians…No mice in my remote desert home with 6 cats!
Love your sharing. One thought I have for the shelves is getting out some barrier in case of an earthquake. ❤
The prices are going to ruin my future pantry. It too expensive to start.
I had mice in an in-door storage unit. My mother put holiday candy in there as is. The unit was an absolute mess — we had to clean it and put a lot of items in heavy duty totes. Oddly enough, the rats that got us didn't eat any cardboard, but they chewed on the styrofoam and some fabric!
I feel better with plastic or metal either way.
That was very helpful thank you ❤️
One more reason not to bring flats home from the store is, roaches love to live and lay their egg sacks in them.
Thank you for this info. I do have some cardboard in my pantry.
20 some years in our house. Last year we got poultry, this year goats. It's the first year we've had a rat problem. It's horrible, we are catching them but there's no end. Can't have inside cats because of our one dog.
I've has mice in my walls. They found the pantry and chewed through the wall into it. You can smell mice. Once you've had an infestation you know when their back. I use mouse traps so hopefully there death is instantaneous. I would NEVER use sticky paper. It's cruel.
I had a mouse problem last spring. They are the insulation out of my gas range. I am having a new gas range delivered this Tuesday!
Not just mice will make a home in the cardboard. My Dad managed Wrights grocery stores in the tri-cities and one thing he taught me is that sometimes in shipping and store rooms bugs can lay their eggs in the cardboard and hatch in your home or in his case your store room. . . So he always taught me to not store things in cardboard to get rid of it immediately. I'm sure you probably know this Patera but some younger watchers may not know
