I wanted to show you in this video how I am growing an edible hedge for food but also as a way to stop my dog from chasing the post lady and running up and down my fence line. The plant/shrub/tree I am using is a Kei Apple so I chat a little about how to grow Dovyalis caffra (Kei apples) and how I keep my dog away from the small plants so they have a chance to develop. Plus, towards the end of the video, I pick some mini guava fruit from our other developing edible hedge and do a quick taste test.

That looks like a good job Mark, your dog's not gonna be happy when he realises that he's been outfoxed 🙂 It'll be interesting to know what the apples taste like when they're ready. Cheers Adam
that is a really clever idea, and I am sure the post lady will be very grateful. Have a marvellous day
Oh Scooter!
I love this concern and have considered doing living fences with these natural defenses.
good call!!
We can always count on you to grow something interesting, Mark!
Our dog was so annoying barking at the dog next door we planted grapes… and she killed some of them with her dumbass behavior. Should have gone thorny like yours!
Mark your lawn is so beautiful!
now that's using the ol' noggin
My dog use to chase to the postman on a bicycle, so I took away the dogs bike hahaha.
Haha nice tips I am sure it will help many
Please update us! Let us know if this is successful as a barrier or fruit producer. I'd like to try this in central Florida. Thanks!:)
Your furbaby looks like our Boo-Boo and he too, likes to chase the fence line at our place here in South Alabama, USA. Do you have any concern about your dogs eyes with those scary thorns?
Sometimes a good hedgerow is all one needs. An edible one is even better.
I had a similar idea to use prickers to my advantage in the front.
check out carissa macrocarpa / martingulu. delicious fruit and not even a well prepared human could get past a plant.
Kei apple is tropical ???
How are they looking now?
Would love to see how the hedge is looking now mate
how long did it take to grow from seed. Please do a video on how to grow from seed. No one has done it yet.
Just got some seeds . You have a Germination vid on these seeds ?? Ty
How are the Kei Apples doing? is the fruit any good?
Can they survive 118 degree Fahrenheit temperatures with high humidity in summer and can they live in a 10 or 15 gallon container
How are your Kei Apple doing,? Are the fruits any good?
Not "Kia" apples. It is pronounced like the "K" in "OK". Sounds like "Kay". Mmmkay? From the Kei River in SA.
I am from SA, they make jams and salad and canned apples and use it for hedges. I think SA weather is a lot like Australia. Kiwis is very difficult to grow here
Noem-noem is another good edible hedge
I'm from South Africa, and wanted to just give you the correct pronunciation for Kei – pronounced Kai – hope this helps 🙂
Can you show an update please?
